The name Howland is quite often thought of as purely a Mayflower family. There are many Howlands in the United States that are not direct descendants of John Howland who came over on the Mayflower. Being indirectly descended disqualifies people from membership in the Mayflower society (I am one of these people). There were several Howland brothers in England. Some joined their brother in what became the United States and others stayed in England. My family for example arrived in the United States in the 1960s.
