I suspect most Irelands originally had Gaelic names like O'Sceaonnassaigh.... and most Irish immigrants couldn't even spell 'Paddy'. So they just got named Ireland, for general ease all round. In Ireland itself, the name is relatively uncommon, and appears mostly to result from re-immigration.
