there is baptism of a James & a Edwin James sons of William & Sarah James of Greige (Graige?) on 13 April 1817 at Grosmont. William was a mason

In the 1841 Census I believe these two are the following entries, can I prove this?
Edwin James 25 Farmer Llangibby Pontypool
Mary James 22 Wife
and
Ann Holmes 45 Independent Bristol
Caroline 20 dau
Harriett 14 day

Prove what?

That Harrett is the illegitimate daughter of Caroline and grandaughter of ann?
That she is the one that married Edwin after his first wife died?

He would have been a good catch ,even if somewhat older,because if my assumption is correct that she has "father unknown"it was harder to find marriages of good standing.

What I find hard is that the 1841 census is so basic, is the only way forward to start collecting birth or marriage certificates. If so I will order it.

Without certificates you can not be sure that you have the right people at all.

this one is a must if you want to be sure of their fathers names.
Although I suspect that there wont be one on it for Harriette by your findings in 1841.

Remember to tick the "yes"box when they ask if the GRO refs are known.


And registration only started in 1837 so you wont be able to get Edwin or Harietts birth certs,you will need to look for their baptisms on ,,family search,,which is free.

is Hariett not the one you printed earlier (only age 14 yrs not 14 days) for 1841

Joseph her father could have been deceased or away from home

could the unreadable bit on the marriage certificate be 'deceased'

Joseph the father may have died before 1841,Harriet may have said she was older to get a position as a servant,made up a fathers name as a lot did who didnt have a fathers known name, or just been badly mistranscribed and could be under any name.

Sorry but it looks like the end of the line for Census,you can try searching for her baptism on ,,family search,,or in the records office in Clifton / bristol.
