Hi all, just a quick update for anyone who's interested....I HAVE applied for the wedding certificate of Maggie Lawson+George T.Joy. which, postal strikes permitting, should hopefully arrive sometime next week.
I have also sent off for the birth certificate of Maggie Lawson.

My apologies to anyone frustrated at my apparent hit'n'miss attention to threads. I am fairly new to this particular site & it's taking a bit of learning on my part, plus the fact that I'm not always online everyday...I do check-in as & when I am able.
Thanks again for all your help!! xx

Thanks, I've got that birth Cert, for Annie Lawton (1st Quarter) 1893. & have tracked much of the Lawton ancesters based on that info.
However, I shall be applying for the wedding cert for Maggie Lawson + Geo.T.Joy ASAP.

Dont know if I've misunderstood your post or not (?) but it was George Thomas Joy who was my nans first husband (wed in1913) & who died during WW1 (1917)
Hubby #2 (my granddad) Herbert W.Edmonds wed her in 1914, survived the war & lived until 1936.

Hi Tracey,

Just put grandson to bed, so thought I would log on for an update re your"secretive" family!

Had to chuckle when I saw the date of Annie & Herberts wedding ,war on Germany was only declared on the 4th August.........so if the George story was true he would have been a fast worker joining up and getting to France, and then unfortunately getting himself killed. Why dont you send for his service records (they may have escaped going up in flames during WW2) that way also you find out the next of kin and their address.

i do have the marriage cert for annie margaret lawton (my nan) to herbert william edmonds (my granddad) wedding date August 7 1914.
This is partly what I based my whole search around as i know it is accurate info.
I definitely want to send for the marriage cert for Maggie Lawson & George Thomas Joy next......its not as if his name was that common, so I feel fairly sure its the right one. And, my nan WAS known as "Maggie" to the daughter of WGC Joy (who I have had recent contact with.)
I would not have even dreamt of looking for this info before, I just assumed she had the baby out of wedlock...thank you for finding it!

lol, yeh it's quite exciting for me lol, sadly, for many many years that part of the family was always somewhat hush-hush lol...nobody talked about Annie/Maggie/my nan's first baby.....I knew of his existance but not of how we were related exactly .
This new info explains alot. I assume that Annie/Maggie was probably told her young hubby was missing/killed in action prematurely....hence her marriage to my granddad..... or maybe it's just plain & simple bigamy - which was very commonplace in those times (a lot cheaper than divorce too!) I doubt I will ever know for sure.
I have done quite extensive research into my family history, & have lots of certs/census etc confirming what I've discovered so far, but the main missing bit is still "ETHEL" lol, I feel as if she could be Annie/Maggie's sister but I cant find any evidence of her anywhere.....so maybe she was actually the sister of George Thomas Joy??? I think I have a lot more searching to do!! LOL.
Thank you SO much for helping me, much appreciated!! xxx

Hi again Tracey,

The George T Joy who married "maggie" Lawson in Chester district 1913, do you think this is Annie Maragaret?

ran a check on more Joy/Lawson births...there are non, so that ties in.

However you say Annie married your grandad 1914, after george was killed in WW1..........there is only one listing for a GT Joy having died in action...........his death noted as 31/05/1917. The plot thickens!

Hi tracey,

Glad you got the hang of replying. This senario seems a little strange, I have just re-read your pm.

There is no marriage showing for a Herbert Edmonds and Annie/LAWSON/LAWTON.......anyone else see what I cant!

Thanks!! I'm sure Ethel is related to Annie (margaret) Lawton somehow, but have had no luck connecting her as yet. Annie was born 4/1/1893 to Emily & Edward Lawton......and although they had the same surname (very common in those parts then) they were never married. Annie was born in Stalybridge, she had her baby WGC Joy in 1913, as far as I know she never married the baby's father Geo.Thomas Joy (who died during WW1) she then married (as a spinster) my granddad Herbert Edmonds in 1914. They moved to London, the baby remained in Cheshire & was, I think, raised by Ethel in or around Helsby/Warrington.
Of course it could be possible that Annie did marry the baby's father using the name Lawson.....then married my granddad with her proper name - Lawton.......it's certainly worth investigating...lol. Thank you!!!

Tracey has replied by pm, as she is unsure how to use the boards, have explained so she should get the hang of it.

A bit weird as she says the name is def LAWTON, and everything is matching to LAWSON.......

June you beat me to it! I saw it was Lawson, there is a family on the 1911 census living Cheshire.........Annie lawson 1898?

Was she a teenage bride, do you know? The interesting thing is that there is a sister called Ethel 3 years older and single/teacher.

Ring any bells Tracey?

Trying to find info on ETHEL (surname & DOB unknown) of LYNTON HOUSE, Sandy Lane, Helsby, Nr.Warrington Cheshire (lived there during 1970's i think???).
(Ethel was known to my mother as "Aunty Ethel"....related somehow(?) on my mums mother's side.)
I believe Ethel was never married & never had children of her own, but is thought to have raised a family members child - "William George Charles Joy - (known as Bob, born 1913 to Annie Margaret Lawton + Geo.Thomas Joy) It's possible she could be Annie Margaret Lawton's sister - although I have found no evidence of her existence so far, or she maybe related to the "JOY" family????

Any information will be extremely welcome! Thank you.
