I have found most of the information on my great Grandfather George Mardle 1898-1978.
His mother was Sarah Mardle whos surname he passed down, there is no father on his birth certificate and so my asumption would be that the father did not hang around, or could have died before they were married?

on the 1891 census Sarah appears as daughter age ten, then in the 1901 census George appears age 3 as grandson in the same household, however Sarah does not appear.
Sarah is listed as a Domestic servent on Georges birth certificate.

I would like to find out if possible where Sarah was a servent and who the father was.

Would any one have any idea how I might go about finding this information?

Thank you for any help you may be able to give me.

Kind regards

Tony

see if you can find her married to one of the men listed in 1901 It could be that George was there on the day of the census being looked after by grandparents,If he was born out of wedlock he would take the mothers name,

Thank you very much for all your replies, I really did not expect any that quickly!!

Tania might be a daft question if so please accept my apologies but before the names in your list it states "Manuell" what does this mean? is it the father?

Your list interests me as you have a Abraham Mardle. Sarah had a brother listed in both the 1891 and 1901 census called Abraham whos date of birth seems to have been around 1891.

Thanks again I am genuinely suprised impressed and happy that so many people on here are willing to take the time to look at other peoples history.

Hi Sablon,

Thanks for your help, I think you may be on to something with what you have found she was showing as age ten on the 1891 census so age 22 in 1901 is pretty close, they also lived in Greenwich.

Only problem is I cannot see George on any of the results do you think he may of been living with his grandparents? hence the 1901 census?

How can I search the 1911 census? I want to have a look for George Mardle and Sarah Mardle especially George to see if they are living together?

thanks

Thank you Tania,

I think it may be right I am just going to have a look on the 1911 census to see if I can find them all together.

Thanks again

Think I may have got to the bottom of this one.

On the 1911 census George is living with his Grand parents, however he is listed as SON.

Sarah is living with Alfred Manuell with their family as well as a visitor (Edward Fowler)
In the 1901 census a Harriet Fowler is at the home of Sarahs Parents listed as Grand Daughter. (possible link)

I think being born before Sarah was married perhaps George always lived with his Grandparents and was adopted or decided to stay with them whilst Sarah continued her life with the Manuells.

George did end up living in West Ham so maybe he moved back to his mother after the death of his grandparents.

Thanks Tania

Just need to find the link between Eliza and the rest of the family, I am thinking she is an older sibling than Sarah that I may have missed on earlier searchs. Or is it like the original man I was searching for George and it was Edward who was born out of marriage?

Thanks again

Thanks Tania.

It seems to make sense now I think Eliza/Harriett was either too old or not born on the census which would have shown her at home with the Mardles and so the first time we see her is once she has her family and is a fowler.

I am going to have a more detailed look into this branch of my familt and order some certificates to find mothers maiden names etc..
Thank you again for all your hard work you are a star.
