HA,
hope you have a nice bank manager like I do,those hard earned credits go quickly.
If I am ever able to meet the 2 greatgrandfathers, in the next life, when I get there, who really helped set me on the trail of enjoying a good mystery I would give them my bill for some of the searching I have done
And a thank you of chocs and flowers would go to the person for the patience of spending time helping me learn how.
But of course, they had a good student ,even though I say it myself!!
Good luck with the hunting

I am sure even though Viv is no longer talking to me and a noose is dangling precariously from her large forboding family tree.... she is secretly very pleased to have solved part of a mysterious tale with threads of intrigue and shrouded in questions!

I bet if she were talking to me she would say it was fun being proven right and doing in it front of evie so she could brag of her adeptness at stripping away the false evidence to reveal the truth!

Yvonne >>>> rushing off to join Scotlandspeople just because Viv told Evie I should :-)

I KNEW it was the right marriage and children,I felt it in my bones, everything just seemed right, even down to them going missing on census.

In the IGI

John Stanton
Spouse: Catharine
Marriage: About 1837 Of, , , Ireland
Messages: Record submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church. No additional information is available. Ancestral File may list the same family and the submitter.
Source Information: No source information is available.

So nobody else knows any more than what's in the 1871.

But you should be able to find John's birth at Scotlandspeople, if you're wanting to trace son William Stanton's ancestry.

Yvonne ... we'll try to break this to you gently. ;)

They weren't married!

It was a very easy matter to flit from country to country and announce you were married when you got there.

Or claim to be not married, and then marry, true. My gr-grfather's sister's husband's uncle had wives in Wales, Chile, NSW and England ... at least two at any given time, as far as I can tell. ;)

They undoubtedly didn't marry in Australia because they already had children when they arrived, and how would that have looked then?!

You are a saint for persevering .... wild goose chases I guess are part of the territory in here huh (ducking for cover from Viv lol)

At least now I am kinda back on the right track I hope!

The puzzle of their marriage continues... As the girls were all born in South Africa and all carry the HANKS name I wonder if they even got married over there and not in Australia as history states.

I got some great old photos of Agnes and Harry and their children both here and in South Africa at school so I ahve faces to the names now. Makes the story much more alive when you can visualise them. Thanks you two xoxo

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 14 Apr 2009 04:23

1891 at same address:

William Brown 57
Isabella Brown 47 - new wife?
Ann Brown 19 - power loom weaver
Isabella Brown 17 - power loom weaver
James Brown 13 - scholar (phew!)

Can't identify Agnes as Stanton, Murray or Brown in 1891.

I wonder whether Murray and Stanton got mixed up in the telling of the tale, and she left Stanton for Murray? Or was with Murray first, but not married to him, and married Stanton?

Oh wait ... the only reference to Murray is on that late marriage certificate in Australia that we are now pretty certain had nothing to do with her? Well that simplifies matters, anyway!

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 14 Apr 2009 04:18

and in 1881 in Calton:

Wm Brown 48
Mary Brown 44
John Brown 24
> Wm Brown 22
Agness Brown 15
> Annie Brown 9
> Bella Brown 6
> James Brown 3
> Mary Brown 7

All the names on your list of sibs.

How entertaining:

Where born: Glasgow, Lanarkshire

So this one of Viv's (who might now throttle you):

1886
STANTON JOHN
BROWN AGNES
CALTON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/04 0146

On the marriage cert of Agnes Brown it says shes 20 [i.e. c1866]
father william ,cotton weaver
and mother mary{deceased}maiden surname,,Kerr

John Stanton is a ,,swing machine fitter
and Agnes is a ,power loom weaver.

is looking like it may very well be the right person/marriage.

Yvonne

Yvonne Report 14 Apr 2009 03:53

Oh Evie.... my head is spinning! Today I finally got an email from a distant cousin that dispells my theory of Agnes being a Murray! Confirmation that indeed she was an Agnes Mary BROWN, born in 1866.

She died in 1934 and age on d/cert listed as 68. Parents listed as William BROWN and Mary KERR.

I am beginning to think this marriage certificate from Victoria may not be hers either :-( It's the oly one I can find though so I guess it's back to the drawing board.

I did find some siblings for Agnes BROWN and some details which may help trace her further....
sister............ Mary BROWN married Jake Gibson
sister.............Annie BROWN married William TELFER
brother...........James BROWN
brother..........William BROWN
sister.............Isabella BROWN married Thomas BANNERMAN at Middelton Parish Church 26/6/1904

All the above from hand written notes... not actualy certificates in possession.

so back to the drawing board for me lol.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 13 Apr 2009 21:18

Yvonne -- I'd be thinking you have got a completely unrelated marriage certificate. ;)

All the details are so just plain wrong!

Could it actually be the marriage of one of her sons, who coincidentally married an Agnes??

Just to clarify re the son -- "assumed he went by the name Harold Stanton" -- you mean William Stanton?

Yvonne

Yvonne Report 13 Apr 2009 11:20

We were led to believe Agnes and Harold followed her son William (born to stanton and later changed his name to Hanks so assumed he went by the name Harold Stanton) to Adelaide South Australia.

They actually married in Melbourne Victoria in March 27th 1915 but eventually settled in Bridgetown Western Australia. She died there, he remarried and later died in Perth.

I actually wonder if they got other people to represent them using their names to be married as the ages on that marriage certificate are 23/18 and pretty clear I have that copy. As I said the parents names were incorrect for her and both said they were born in NSW.

Hope in a week I will have both their death certificates so will update you then !

No Viv, my relative still hasnt forwarded her death certificate so as soon as Easter is over I will order and pay for it from Western Australia. I do hope it has some some accuracies on it as I think Agnes lied so much to cover her past that the details on that may not be truthful either. Especially since it was away from her birth country, but lets hope it gives something concrete.
Will post as soon as I get it. :-)
