ALICE NICHOLLS (17-04-1909) Hi - I'm trying to track down any of my mother's relations on her mother's side of the family. My grandmother was Alice Nicholls (17-4-1909) and was born in Stowbridge/Stow Bardolph, Norfolk. My mother (Joan White 30/4/1933 Cambridge) tells me that her mother, who was known as Derry, had two brothers and three sisters Harold (1900), Ralph (1902), Elsie (1911), and Beatrice 1903 (Trixie). In addition there were older children, all who died young - Alice Lilian 1892- 1902 Dora 1893-1902 Emily 1895-1896 Twins Henry & Emily 1896 - 1897 Pleasance 1899- 1945 Ada 1905 - 1907. My Grandmother, Alice's parents were Henry Nicholls (13/6/1860-12/5/1930, a shoemaker) and Emma Emms (16/9/1870-8/2/1940). They married on 24/9/1890Alice's grandfather was William Nicholl (1830, Fitchem this could be Litcham or Fincham); he married Ann (1834, Stow, Norfolk). They had Henry (Alice's father), Alfred (1863, Stow, Norfolk), William (1871, Stow, Norfolk) and Elizabeth (1873, Stow, Norfolk). They all lived on Low Road, Stow Bardolph. Interestingly - 1871 and 1881 census the name is spelt Nickols - they reappear as Nicholls in the 1891 census living in Ouse Bank, Stow Bardolph. Harold was married to Dorothy Bywater (Dorry) in 1928 and they had Lance (1944), Malcolm (1937) and Mona (1929, eldest child) - all born in Stow Bardolph/Stowbridge, Norfolk. Mona and Lance still live in their parents' house in Stowbridge, Norfolk. Malcolm married Pauline Butcher on April 6 1960and they had three children - Adrian (31/12/1965), Matthew (15/9/1972) and Amanda (5/11/1967). Adrian maried Mandy and they had Joshua and Alex in 1990 and 1994. Ralph married Hilda Wilding in 1930 and they lived in Denver Sluice - they had a son called Ronald (1930). Ronald married Pearl Burton in 1960 and they had Peter, David and Jane. Jane married Gary Webb and they had Jack and Sally. Peter married and had Carl, Clare and Jenna. Elsie married Claude Pettit and they lived in Trumpington and Stow cum Quy and had two children Dennis and Brian. Claude Pettitt was chief cowman for Sir Roger de Trumpington of Trumpington Hall(?). Trixie married Jim Smith in 1928 and they had Leslie and Yvonne and lived in Mildenhall. Jim Smith was a manager on the railway. In 1948 Yvonne married a farm manager called 'no first name' Roberts and had two children Colin (1948) and Valerie (1952). They lived near Mildenhall. Leslie married in 1955 - I believe he had three sons - Nicky, Patrick and Gregory. He lives in Newmarket. Alice married Horace Leslie White in November 1932 in St Lukes Church, Chesterton, Cambridge and had Joan Elizabeth (my mother) in 1933. Please let me know if you recognise any details. Here's hoping I hear from you! Nicola Musgrave
