Are there lists of these children who were sent away
|
Hi Patricia -- there are some databases, but they aren't complete.
Canada has one here:
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/home-children/001015-100.01-e.php
but I did a search for Hilda and Harold, with no luck. It's possible they did come to Canada and are in records that haven't been included in the database.
They wouldn't likely have been sent to the US, since that was a foreign country. Canada and Australia were the main destinations for Home Children; we were not really foreign, you see. So many children were brought to Canada that it's estimated that 10% of the population has a Home Child ancestor.
I checked the Ontario marriage index up to 1924, the last available. No Hilda Pearson marriages. A few Harold Pearson marriages, but the parents don't match. It isn't possible to check for births after 1906; there's a 100-year privacy rule.
I checked passenger records at findmypast. So many Harold Pearsons travelled to Canada between 1900 and 1920 (not to mention the H Pearsons) there's no way of identifying one, really. This is a Hilda who doesn't quite match, but children's ages were not always known or recorded accurately in the circumstances:
PEARSON Hilda 9 F 1912 Liverpool Canada Quebec
The Canadian census is only available up to 1911. If the children came here and were quite young at the time, before 1911, they could have been adopted and their surname changed. Older children were more often taken into households as workers rather than family members, especially boys who worked on farms.
The 1911 census has half a dozen Harolds born Jan 1899 (assuming his correct birthdate was known) in England. One is shown as the adopted son of Clara and Edward Wright, but his name is given as Harold Sales.
The Canadian censuses are for the most part barely legible to start with, and badly scanned. Harold Sales's name is clear. This one isn't clear, but does look as if this is what it says:
Name: Hilda Headen Gender: Female Marital Status: Single Age: 12 Birth Date: Apr 1899 Birthplace: England Family Number: 120 Relation to Head of House: Head Immigration Year: 1909 Tribal: English Province: Ontario District: Northumberland East District Number: 101 Sub-District: Brighton Sub-District Number: 30 Place of Habitation: Brighton Census Year: 1911 Page: 8 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Hilda Headen 12
She is not a head of household. She is obviously attached to the preceding household, but her status in the household is apparently a ditto to the preceding person, and that one is impossible to decipher. If you PM me an email address, I can send you a copy of the image.
I considered but discarded this marriage:
Name: Harry James Pearson Birth Place: England Age: 23 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1900 Father Name: Arthur Pearson Mother Name: Martha Scaldwell Spouse Name: Eleanor Mirehouse Spouse's Age: 21 Spouse Estimated Birth Year: abt 1902 Spouse Birth Place: England Spouse Father Name: Jouathan Mirehouse Spouse Mother Name: Sarah Ann Gill Marriage Date: 4 Sep 1923 Marriage Place: Middlesex Marriage County: Middlesex Registration district: Middlesex Family History Library Microfilm: VRMCAN1923_102577
He must be this one in the 1911:
Name: Harry Pearson Gender: Male Marital Status: Single Age: 11 Birth Date: Dec 1900 Birthplace: Angleterre Family Number: 45 Relation to Head of House: Fils (Son) Father's Name: Arthur Mother's Name: Martha Tribal: English Province: Quebec District: Quebec East District Number: 190 Sub-District: Poll 2 Sub-District Number: 35 Place of Habitation: L'Orme Census Year: 1911 Page: 7 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Arthur Pearson 40 Martha Pearson 42 Stanley Pearson 19 Frank Pearson 15 Harry Pearson 11
I haven't looked at vital statistics for other provinces -- you can find sites for Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and, I think, Nova Scotia, by googling the name of the province and "vital statistics". But so far there's no trace of them in Canada, assuming they would have come as young children before 1911.
Take a look here:

Your names don't appear in that database, though.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I was wondering is it possible that Arthur Pearson re-married ,his wife Emily must have died around 1906/7,because Gladys was adopted around that time, maybe Martha Scaldwell was his 2nd wife,Arthur was born4/9/1871 at Tuner Bottom Rishworth, curious

Interesting theory! This Arthur's birthdate is out, though, although only slightly -- 1911 census:
Name: Arthur Pearson Gender: Male Marital Status: Married Age: 40 Birth Date: ** Jun 1871 ** Birthplace: Angleterre (England) Family Number: 45 Relation to Head of House: Chef (Head) Spouse's Name: Martha Immigration Year: 1903 Tribal: English Province: Quebec District: Quebec East District Number: 190 Sub-District: Poll 2 Sub-District Number: 35 Place of Habitation: L'Orme Census Year: 1911 Page: 6 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Arthur Pearson 40 Martha Pearson 42 Stanley Pearson 19 Frank Pearson 15 Harry Pearson 11
And the other kids don't fit.
This is their marriage:
Name: Martha Scaldwell + Arthur Pearson Year of Registration: 1890 Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec District: Northampton (1837-1923) County: Northamptonshire Volume: 3b Page: 209
This is your Arthur's:
Name: Emily Rylance + Arthur Pearson Year of Registration: 1898 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: Halifax County: Yorkshire - West Riding, West Yorkshire Volume: 9a Page: 859
Looks like one of those coincidences.
