Is your grandfather Albert Schact?

As for thanking people or answering questions, you just reply to your own thread at the top where it has REPLY & BOOKMARK THIS.

People see your answer & are grateful you've received the info. It's also nice if you say whether it was useful or just asked more questions. People are always willing to help.

The only mention of that surname I can find on Ancestry between 1870 and 1875 is for a Charles Schact living in Lincolnshire.

Could he have been bought up by other people. If his parents had died there was no legal adoptions then but perhaps someone else bought him up and changed his name?Just a thought Annie

There is an Ernest Schact c1871 on the 1901 census and in 1891 he is named Ernest A, perhaps the A stood for Albert.

His military records could be wrong.

My grandfather's army record says he was born in Co. Durham (which is where he grew up), but he was actually born in London.

My father's army record has his year of birth wrong, because he lied and made himself look older to get into the army.

This is the birth of Ernst (Ernest):-

Name: Ernst August Schacht
Year of Registration: 1870
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: London City
County: Greater London, London, Middlesex
Volume: 1c
Page: 53

Maybe when he joined the army he wanted to Anglicise his name and chose Albert.

Ozibird Report 9 Mar 2009 23:29

Exactly what information do you have from his military records?

Schacht is not a very common name at that time & for both men to be born in Poplar there's a possibility they're related somewhere down the line.

Hi,
Dont know if this is of any help but in 1881 Edward Schacht c 1870 and his brother Albert c 1872 both born in Poplar, were in the Forest Gate District School West Ham, this was a barrack school as well as a workhouse, it may be his parents were dead or they were all in the workhouse at that time and the boys put into the schools, they are both said to be scolars, but this was a school that had bands and a lot of the boys became bandsmen with which tie up with his profession on his papers.

I agree with Joan on the 1901 census for the Schacht boys.

Do you have your grandfather's marriage cert? If so what was his father's name?
