NEW UPDATE on Page 4
,Please, ...I need help to find a beginning and an end for Florence.

I first find her in 1891 in Wales with Edward and Catherine SKERRETT, ....but transcribed SHERRETT.
Her age is given as 9, suggesting a birthdate of c. 1882, but Edward and Catherine (nee VAUGHAN ) didn't marry until 1885, so Florence may not be Edward's daughter.

In 1901 Edward and Catherine have moved back to the Whitbourne, Herefordshire and Florence is in Montgomeryshire, Wales working for Rev. Chas HARRINGTON.
After that..... I lose her.........

With a birthplace given as Ullingswick, Herefordshire, Florence should have been registered in the Bromyard area, but I can't find her birth in either surname.

Any help to give a fuller picture would be really welcome.

Thanks

Gwyn

Jackie
Thank you for looking.

Unfortunately there is a corresponding death, which is likely to be that Florence....and another one in 1887.
It is likely that they fit into the family somewhere though.

The marriage for ref too

Marriages Mar 1885
Skerrett Edward Henry Bromyard 6a 741
Vaughan Catherine Bromyard 6a 741

Where were they both in 1881? I'm not having any luck with that.

I missed something (post now deleted) that must have been births to go with the deaths you posted Gwyn?

I bought the birth certificate for the baby, Edward Henry SKERRETT, to see if his mother's former surname was VAUGHAN... It was.

Jackie had kindly offered a Kidderminster area birth for a Florence Gertrude in 1883.

In 1881, I believe Edward is the person shown as Edward Henry WOOD living with his grandparents at Steps House, Ullingswick, Herefordshire.

SORRY...As Edward H.WOOD
He was also there in 1871.

I have not found Catherine before marriage.

I'll bet you don't have the marriage certificate?

Ah - but her name on the birth cert was Vaughan, so there goes the previous marriage theory ...

His birth was registered as Wood? Because I don't see one as Skerrett.

We likes to see these things - and it's harder to find 'em without knowing the transcriptions.

1871

I think this is possibly Edward.., especially as it has Henry with it.
Just about all the SKERRETTs in that area are linked at that time and I can't account for an Edwin.
An Edward Henry Skerrett was baptised 26 May 1861.

Births Jun 1861

SKERRETT Edwin Henry ..Bromyard 6a 497

A double posting...

There are other examples of this extended family registering a child in one name, then calling it another.
Edward Henry (1861) had a brother Robert Allen ( from gravestone ) but who was registered Richard....

1861

Civil parish: Ullingswick
James Wood 46
Ann Wood 43
Elizabeth Skerrett 21 - daughter >> married
Richard A Wood 18
Amelia Bowers 14
William Skerrett 14 - servant

?

Was Edward Elizabeth's son then?

Just looking for any other possible surname. Lots of times people used a surname in life and in censuses, but did official things like get married in their official names.

edit

Marriages Jun 1859
Bright Sarah Leominster 6a 976
PRICE Thomas Leominster 6a 976
? Skerrett Herbert Leominster 6a 976
Walton Samuel Leominster 6a 976
? Wood Elizabeth Leominster 6a 976

So he seems to be settled as a Skerrett.

Ah yes - Edwin/Edward/Edmund - interchangeable all the time. In the case of my own grfather in fact. ;)

Hm -- who's this then??

Births Dec 1881
SKERRETT Frances Ruth Bromyard 6a 513

Exactly the right time to be Florence ...

... And she neither married nor died ...

Frances Ruth is still in Ullingswick in 1901.
She is shown as Ruth and is the daughter of Herbert and Elizabeth.

She married as Ruth in 1904 in Pontypridd, then again as Frances Ruth HARGEAVES in 1907
I had already been told by a living distant relative that 'Ruth married Jack DEMAID'.

Aargh. I was still hunting around for her.

You are a wet blanket, Gwyn. But do tell us ahead of time whom you've ruled out, if you have!

I see Fanny's on teh case now. ;)

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 10 Feb 2010 19:09

Sorry !

I hadn't considered Frances Ruth, probably because I think of her as 'Ruth'

Ullingswick is such a small place, even today.
To give you some idea of size I can tell you that the original marriage register started 1837 was handed into the Record Office in 2004.
It was still only half full.

Not that that helps to find Florence,........

Taking another tack -- the only Skerrett in 1911 born in Ullingsworth is

SKERRETT HERBERT M 1887 24 Tewkesbury Gloucestershire
living with Alice Emma Skerrett, aged 22, and Violet Skerrett, 6 months.

There are a half dozen Florences born in Bromyard 1880-1884, none in Ullingsworth ...

Have you got the marriage cert of Edward and Catherine? Who are their fathers?

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 10 Feb 2010 19:21

That Herbert was in Wales in 1891.
He was the son of Edward and Catherine, so brother to the missing Florence.

Does it say born in Ullingsworth.
Should be Ullingswick, where he was baptised 13 Sept 1885.
I don't have cert., but have him probably marrying Alice Emma NASH in 1908.
