Find Ancestors

Can anyone throw any light on where Effie Skinner came from or went to!?
She appears on 1901 census as a daughter of Moses Trayton Skinner and his wife Mary Ann, aged 17 and born in India. She isn't with the family on previous censuses and it's unlikely that they ever went to India. In a court case in 1904 Moses said that his youngest daughter had secured a place at a school in Yorkshire ( presumably work ). I can't find her in 1911, or a marriage that fits, or a death. She is not the daughter of a Skinner relative, or, as far I as can find anything to do with the Strickland family ( her "mother's" maiden name ).

I haven't found very much but do you think that Effie could possibly have been a 'grand-daughter'?

It looks as though Moses and Mary may have had a son called Moses around 1866 / 7 / 8 ? - I have him on 1911 as a widow:

He would JUST about be old enough to be the father of Effie. He was a ship wright so could well have travelled, or served in the Military in India.

I am having difficulty following him back through the census's so he could well have been abroad?

Just something to think about at the moment, you may well have info on him which disproves this?

Effie = Euphemia (Scottish Name)

Moses is down as a "writer" in a shipyard - mistake by the ennumerator really - he confused "write" with "wright" it seems!!!!

I think this must be the census you mention. She is 19 and her dads profession could mean he had to travel

That looks like the father Moses. I think for some reason to has put his age as 45 and birth year as 1866 instead of age 66 birth year 1845!

Doesn't help with Effie though. I am wondering if she could have been a daughter of one of the brother's of Moses. The fact that she has the surname Skinner and Moses and his wife don't seem to have a son and their daughters were to young to be the mother of Effie.

I wonder if this is a possibility??

Effie Louise Skinner seems to be the daughter of John + Harriet. who does not appear to fit with the one we are following?

Just got back from work and had dinner.
Moses son of the same name died as an infant.
The 1901 job title of Financier is a rather posh way of stating that he was a money lender, it was this that led to the 1904 court case where he was declared bankrupt.
I think I have double checked all the possible Effie Skinner marriages and found them on earlier censuses.
I don't think the family ever went to India, Moses was churchwarden in Gillingham and, until his court appearance, is mentioned in the parish records weekly as counting the money for them!
He was also cited in a divorce case shortly after the death of his wife but I don't think Effie had anything to do with that.
