Rachel Spenceley & Robert Harrison

Trying to find any information on Rachel Spenceley and Robert Harrison of Glaisdale, Yorkshire. They were married about 1885. in Rosedale, Yorkshire. Trying to find who Roberts father was as no father is listed on his birth certificate.

If there is no father listed on his birth certificate, then that means he was illegitimate.


That means it will extremely difficult if not downright impossible to find his father.


The only possible way might be if the vicar happened to have made a notation in the parish register at the time of Robert's baptism as to the father, or putative father. That does happen, but is quite rare.

Are you basing the date of the marriage on the age of the eldest child on here??

I looked on www.freebmd.org.uk for their marriage.

I found this marriage of a Rachael Spenceley, and with one man missing from the listing.

There is something strange as there are actually two entries for Rachel in this quarter, by two different transcribers. They seemed to have had difficulty with the page number:-

I looked in the Complete Index on ancestry, and found a marriage for

Harrison, Robert Pickering Dec quarter 1885 9d 833

I then did the cross search on there, and found Rachel also showing 9d 833

which may well be the correct registration


I suggest you order the marriage certificate from www.gro.gov.uk. The GRO reference number they will ask for, is 9d 833. The certificate will cost £7, but is the only way to be certain of parentage.

The only snag is that an illegitimate child may make up a father for his marriage certificate because he/she thinks it looks better!
