So where have you found them so far, so we dont duplicate research? Have you found the marriage of William S Stanley? That would be the most important certificate to buy for £7 from GRO online.

Where were the children born? I cant see them in London.

This'll be son William with mother in 1871:

Name: William J Stanley
Age: 10
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1861
Relation: Son
Mother's Name: Jannet
Gender: Male
Where born: Liverpool, Lancashire, England

Name: Jannet Stanley
Age: 38
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1833
Relation: Head
Gender: Female
Where born: Glasgow, Scotland
Condition as to marriage: Widow
Occupation: Greengrocer

Civil Parish: Liverpool
Ecclesiastical parish: St James the Less
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Registration district: Liverpool
Sub-registration district: St Martin
ED, institution, or vessel: 42
Household schedule number: 13

Jannet Stanley 38
William J Stanley 10

Liverpool is where son William and wife Ann are living in later censuses.

In the 1861, son William was 1 month old, and this is father William:

Name: William Stanley
Age: 28
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1833
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Janet
Gender: Male
Where born: London, England
Occupation: Mariner

So that seems to be where the info in the opening post comes from.

Of course I echo the advice about getting the marriage certificate.

But you can do FreeBMD from home, Della!

http://www.freebmd.org.uk

If you search for marriages, say from 1857 to 1862, for:

surname: Stanley
given name: William
spouse's given name: Jan*

you'll catch all pages where there are a Wiliam Stanley and a Janet or Jannet ... or Jane ...

And this is the only one that matches the specs:

Marriages Dec 1858
** Dakden Janet Liverpool 8b 108
Emery William Liverpool 8b 108
Gibson Elizabeth Liverpool 8b 108
** Stanley William Liverpool 8b 108

You can't be sure that this William married this Janet, or that they're yours, without getting the certificate, but if they are a couple, his occupation on the certificate should tell you. You'll want to do that search and check the image to verify the info. I'd also order it under his name only, since there's quite likely something screwy with her surname. That's what it looks like on the image, but it's pretty odd.

It's info from before William J's birth that you're looking for, is that right? Getting his birth cert might give you a better idea of Janet's surname.

There were a lot of William Stanleys born in Lancashire in 1860-1862. But aha, if he was 1 mo. old in the 1861 census:

Name: William Stanley
Age: 1 Mo
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1861
Relation: Son
Father's Name: William
Mother's Name: Janet
Gender: Male
Where born: Liverpool

Civil Parish: Liverpool
Ecclesiastical parish: St Aidan
Town: Liverpool
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Name: William Stanley
Age: 28
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1833
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Janet
Gender: Male
Where born: London, England

Name: Janet Stanley
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1831
Relation: Wife
Spouse's Name: William
Gender: Female
Where born: Scotland

Registration district: Liverpool
Sub-registration district: St Martin
ED, institution, or vessel: 53
Household schedule number: 37

Janet Stanley 30
William Stanley 28
William Stanley 1 Mo

-- that should narrow it down -- to one possibility:

Births Mar 1861
STANLEY William W Derby 8b 26_

With, oh good, an unreadable page number.

Scans are sometimes better at Ancestry; lemme take a look.

Page 268. Plain as day.

So that should be him, and the certificate should get you his parents' names. And the marriage certificate will get you their fathers' names, and then you're back before registration.

Heh. I wonder whether it was the GRO transcriber who was way off. In 1851 in Liverpool (searching for any Janet born in Scotland in 1831), there is:

Name: Janet Aitken
Age: 20
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1831
Relation: Daughter
Mother's Name: Janet
Gender: Female
Where born: Scotland

Civil Parish: Liverpool
Ecclesiastical parish: Vauxhall
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England

Registration district: Liverpool
Sub-registration district: St Martin
ED, institution, or vessel: 1nn
Household schedule number: 274

Archibald Aitken 18
Janet Aitken 48
Janet Aitken 20
Margaret Aitken 11

One possibility, maybe. A Janet Marton born 1832 might be another. Need to know what her surname really was before a good search of the pre-1861 censuses can be done.

In Janet Aitken's case, the youngest child was born in Liverpool, suggesting that the family was there in 1841, but I'm not seeing them on a quick search.

And for William, not knowing whether he was in London or Liverpool before 1858, you need his father's name to search properly.

Git those certificates, and let us know!
