I am trying to help a friend in Canada who is researching Henry Tarbox c 1823. So much of the data seems elusive.

OBJECTIVE : To find his birth, marriage and possibly parents and locations for all missing censuses.

TIMELINE :

1822-23 - Born in Middlesex. Date deduced from 1871 census and Death Certificate (seen).

1841 - No trace on census

1841-1860 - Marriage to Ann French. Searched for this marriage from 1841 (w/b 18) to 1860 (birth of Elizabeth). No trace. There is a marriage in 1854 for Henry Tarbucks to Ann Dover. This pair have been followed and it is not our Henry.

1851 - No trace on census

c 1857 - Birth of first daughter Maria in Shoreditch, Middlesex (info from 1871 census). No BMD entry can be found.

1861 (Apr) - No trace on 1861 census. The address, Godfrey Place, (where he was in Oct 1861) doesn't appear to be on the census.

1861 (Oct) - Daughter Elizabeth born at 5 Godfrey Place, Bethnal Green. Father Henry Tarbox, Mother Ann Tarbox formerly French (Birth Cert seen).

1871 (Apr) - Census - At 4 Duncan Court, Shoreditch, Middlesex
Henry Tarbox, Head, Marr, 48, Bootmaker, b Shoreditch Middlesex
Ann Tarbox, Wife, 47, Box maker, b Chelmsford Essex
Maria Tarbox, Dau, 14, Scholar, b Shoreditch Middlesex
Elizabeth Tarbox, Dau, 10, Scholar, b Shoreditch Middlesex

1871 (Oct) - Died 2 Oct 1871. Abode : 4 Duncan Court, Shoreditch, Middlesex (now London of course). Age at death 49. Death Cert seen.

1876 - Daughter Maria marries Frederick Clayton at St Thomas' Church, Bethnal Green.

1881 - Census - At 42 Angrave Street, Shoreditch
Widow Ann 51, with daughter Elizabeth 19 and a boarder.

So much of this timeline seems missing. I am wondering where the next avenue of investigation should be. I would appreciate advice from veterans on where I should look next. It is possible for me to visit the National Archives at Kew, but to be quite honest, I don't know where to start my search. Do you think there might be "street directories" available? I am thinking maybe Henry maybe listed as he was a Bootmaker, but of course he probably just worked for someone else.

Further info I have found online for Tarbox's, which may or may not be relevant to this family is :

1921 Hughes Business Directory
Henry J Tarbox, Bootmaker, 3b Drayton Park, N (which is Highbury, N London)

1938 Trades Directory
Tarbox, Mrs May and Sons, 3b Drayton Park, N5

Other sundry info found which refers to the family of a Henry John Tarbox. No evidence can be found to connect this family with the Henry Tarbox above.

These are all events at St Leonard's, Shoreditch

1819 - 10 Jan, Baptism, Caroline Tarbox
Son of William and Mary Ann, Occ Shoemaker
Abode Crown Court

1824 - 18 May, Baptism, George Tarbox
Son of William and Mary, Occ Shoemaker
Abode Crown Court

1827 - 10 Jun, Baptism, Henry John Tarbox
Son of William and Ann, Occ Shoemaker
Abode Curtain Road

1839 - 25 Dec, Burials of Mary Ann Tarbox (46) and Caroline Tarbox (21), both of Workhouse

As I said I have no link with my family, but it would be really great to find evidence to proove that the last family is indeed that of my Henry (c 1823).

I would appreciate any guidance on this.

Re: 1861

Many pieces of this census are missing/damaged etc. Most of those affected are for the Home Counties

Just my luck, Flick !!

Is it possible he was born slightly later?

Thanks Catherine. Yes it's a possibility he was born later. We all know what dates on censuses are like !
I had included this in my post, see the very end where I say I wish I could link this entry with my Henry. Thanks.

Just speculating.........

Births Jun 1857 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

French Maria Bethnal Gn 1c 307

Bryn Report 26 Aug 2010 09:17

Just a footnote. Every document or record which has been found refers to HENRY. I am only guessing (hoping) that he may actually be HENRY JOHN.

Bryn

Bryn Report 26 Aug 2010 09:20

Thanks Flick. I had seen that one. It is difficult to follow through to the 1861 census as there are so many Maria French's. Wanted to tie up with Ann born Essex, but couldn't match. Getting a Birth Cert may prove the point.

Flick

Flick Report 26 Aug 2010 09:20

You refer to the fact that Elizabeth's birth cert has been seen..................

I can't see a GRO index to match the details...........can you please post them.

Flick

Flick Report 26 Aug 2010 09:22

1851 census has no record for Ann French born in Chelmsford in 1830 +/-2 yrs

Bryn

Bryn Report 26 Aug 2010 09:24

Another note - Maria's father is shown on her marriage entry as Henry Tarbox, ladies bootmaker.

Bryn

Bryn Report 26 Aug 2010 09:25

Flick - True. It seems everyone in this family is hiding !

Flick

Flick Report 26 Aug 2010 09:26

Elizabeth's birth? See my query..........

Bryn

Bryn Report 26 Aug 2010 09:26

I haven't got Elizabeth's birth cert myself. I will contact Canada, but bear in mind they are around 7 hours behind UK.

I suppose a possibility for Ann French on the 1851 census might be :
At River Street, Islington, Visitor, Ann French, born c 1821 Harlow Essex. Occ : House servant

Harlow is maybe 10km from Chelmsford and I suppose she may have been born between the towns (she is shown b Chelmsford on 1871 and 1881 censuses).

Islington is a possibility, just north east of the St Leonards Shoreditch area where the family is known to have been.

Bryn

Bryn Report 26 Aug 2010 09:48

Sorry Catherine. I hadn't noticed that the replies went onto Page 2, so just seen your posts. Will digest them now.

Catherine

Catherine Report 26 Aug 2010 10:01

This would be Emma's marriage:-

Name: Emma Tarbox
Age: Minor
Address: 25 Britannia Row
Spouse Name: Richard Archer
Spouse Age: Full Age
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 6 Apr 1842
Parish: St Mary
County: Middlesex
Borough: Islington
Father Name: William Tarbox
Occupation: Shoemaker
Spouse Father Name: John Archer

...........so if this is the correct family then in 1842 they were living in Islington.

Thanks Caroline. Still digesting the prev info. Have some funnies !
Your last mail ties in nicely with my findings in message timed 09:47. I have a possible Ann French being in Islington in 1851. I know its 10 yrs later, but likely she met Henry in Islington.
Pure speculation as yet !
