I have seen where children have been born to women close to 50 .... so there could well be other children.

Unfortunately, the mmn doesn't show on the registrations until 1911.

and Davies/Davis is such a common name .... and I think you do have to look at both spellings.

Richard Davis 47 b.ca 1854, Cornwall
Thomas H Davis 13
William Davis 21

It would be much easier if they could make up their minds where they were born!!!

So far, Mary is born in Lyons France, Eilter Devon (which might be Exeter!), and now Cornwall! And Richard is now down as born in Cornwall!!

This one does fit in with the fact that the only Mary Ann Prisk I could find were all in Cornwall, and she and Richard were married in Cornwall.

I'm just poking around to see if I can sort out where Minnie might have been born!!

I wonder .......... if her mother was christened Mary Ann but called Minnie, whether she did the same to her daughter? Christened her Mary Ann, but called her Minnie??

In addition should any further children have been born to this family after 1901 then I would say it would be around Londons East End? Dont know though as Richard and Mary Ann were getting too old maybe?

Thankyou Sylvia,
Your help is most appreciated. I dont know if Minnie is a diminutive? My Great Grandmother Mary Ann always liked to be known as Minnie. I found this out from someone searching the Prisk line. Perhaps if she liked the name Minnie so much then she named my Grandfathers sister by that name. I also have a Great Aunt Minnie and Yes that was her birth name. I rather think its a nice name but I am fond of those old fashioned names. Can you imagine someone today calling their daughter Minnie? Lol No dont think so. Any help Sylvia is welcome from you.

Regards Marion

ps Could be Richards Birth Ref? I dont know much about the area. Davies is such a common name and I have only managed to find out my Great Great Grandfathers name from my Great Grandparents Marriage Cert. It was George and his profession was a Sailor. I have contacted the On Line Parish Clerk for the area of Devon and not much can be found. Thankyou Sylviax

Could this be Richard's birth registration .......... Plymouth registration district includes East Stonehouse, which is the parish they are living in on the 1881 Census

Births Jun 1875 (>99%)

Davis Richard Ford Plymouth 5b 242

Now to see if I can find Minnie .............. who doesn't seem to appear under that name! Must be a diminutive???

I assume you ahve looked carefully on www.freebmd.org.uk??

These births are all during a time period that should have been transcribed.

freebmd will show them as being registered in a certain district .............. but that registration district consists of a number of smaller places. So it is no good looking fro Tom Jones born in Deeeping on freebmd if Deeping is not a registration district.

If you can find them on freebmd, you could order the birth certificate for each one, and find out where they were actually born ........ the certificate is really the only way to be sure that you do have that accurate.

You order certificates from www.gro.gov.uk, each one will cost £7 ............. never ever order them from anywhere other than GRO or the actual registry office. Anywhere else will charge you far too much ....... I believe some sites are charging as much as £25 or £30!

Thankyou all so much for your help. Yes thats my Davies Ancestors. I have never been able to find an exact birth place for Minnie born 1874 and Richard 1875. I have had help over the years but nothing possitive. Val my Grandfather was born on the 9th
September 1887 Reg District Romford,Sub Dis of Barking Town. The Birth Cert was sent to me and all I can see in the Column space is the number 91 so I guess thats the page number. Ivy Yes I do think there must have been other siblings born. My Mothers sister Nellie was supposed to have been named after my Grandfathers sister. Minnie and Nellie I suppose do sound alike but I have always thought there was a Florence as well?. Hmmm

Thankyou Ladies

Were you thinking that there ought to be other children between Richard and William - or after George? Davi(e)s is a very common and widespread name!

Do you have the birth records for those on the census returns?

Ivy

Ivy Report 24 Feb 2008 15:31

Is it possible that this is the family in 1881?

Name: Minnie Davis
Age: 5
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1876
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: Richard
Mother's Name: Mary A.
Gender: Female
Where born: Lydstow, Devon, England

Civil Parish: East Stonehouse
County/Island: Devon
Country: England

Street address: 12 Chapel St

Registration district: East Stonehouse
Sub-registration district: East Stonehouse
ED, institution, or vessel: 1

Household Members:
Name Age
Mary A. Davis 27 b Lyons, France
Minnie Davis 5 b Lydstow, Devon
Richard Davis 29 b Plympton, Devon
Richard Davis 4 b Lydstow, Devon

(I'll have another look at 1891 to see if Eilter is actually Lydstow)

[Ed: well no, but it does rather look as if the 1891 enumerator wasn't sure what he was trying to transcribe!]

I am wondering if anyone could help please with Birth lookups.
My Great Grand Parents married in 1872 Cornwall St Hilary. Their children as I have the details were Minnie born 1874,Richard born 1875,William 1880 Wandsworth,James 1890,George 1891 Stratford or Barking and my Grandfather Thomas Henry Davies born1887 Barking. You can find them on the 1881/91/1901 census but birth places for each Census is so mismatched. Does anyone have access to Birth Records as I believe my Grandfather did have other siblings whose names are unknown to me and year of birth. My Great Grandparents names were Richard and Mary Ann Davies Nee Prisk.

Thankyou
