"little sleep!!"
I suppose we will have to wait and see if Adrian is going to get the marriage cert and/or if he knows when they died to have a look for death index for their ages

Ivy

Ivy Report 8 Apr 2008 07:43

- and another possibility is that Thomas might be Horace's older brother or uncle ...

Ivy Report 8 Apr 2008 07:32

Hi Janice,

You've either had precious little sleep, or are overseas! I've been wondering about this too, and had a look at this site:

http://www.leinster-regiment-association.org.uk/

It has a regimental history on it, but so far there appear to be no links to the regiment recruiting in East Anglia. I did get excited when I saw that they had been in Jamaica, and that one of the Thomas Burley service/pension records was for a lad born in Jamaica, but checking it out showed that it was the wrong regiment.

Looking at more of the specific biogs of Leinster soldiers, there was one whose ancestor joined up in London - perhaps Thomas only settled in East Anglia after discharge from the regiment?

If he was born in Cambridgeshire then there is this in 1901 but perhaps to old, so as Ivy said may have been born after 1901

Hi Janice,

I agree, that looks like it isn't him (was always a long shot...)

There don't seem to be obvious candidates for either Irene or Horace - I'm guessing that they were born after 1901?

jansmith

jansmith Report 7 Apr 2008 23:36

magicadey

magicadey Report 7 Apr 2008 22:47

my nan cissie (or celia) salamon. died 1997

the number for thomas isl is 5557 which is leinster regiment
horace ww2 medal has no numbers which is annoying

jansmith

jansmith Report 7 Apr 2008 22:38

Are there any numbers round the rim of the medal. i.e. his regimental number

Ivy

Ivy Report 7 Apr 2008 22:38

This is about the closest to Wisbech Horace Burley birth around 1900:

Name: Horace Leonard Burley
Year of Registration: 1899
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
District: Sleaford (To 1933)
County: Lincolnshire
Volume: 7a
Page: 495

You'd need to get your nan's birth certificate to identity her parents - as Janice says, if you can find the death registration, it will give you her date of birth (if the informant had remembered it correctly)

jansmith

jansmith Report 7 Apr 2008 22:36

what was your nans name .I can look for death index. If you got the certificate it would say who registered it if that helps

magicadey

magicadey Report 7 Apr 2008 22:27

well my nan was born in wisbech, cambridgeshire so im guessing that they went there. never had irish accent or mention irish family so guessing english person joined the regiment when based here

Ivy

Ivy Report 7 Apr 2008 22:06

Leinster was an Irish regiment. Have a look at this website:

http://tinyurl.com/3gt7tc

His medal card is on Ancestry, but you already have that, and unlike some which give addresses on the back, his is blank.

I think you can search Ancestry for free for deaths after 1984.

You might then need to ask for look-ups or join Ancestry or Findmypast to find births/marriages between 1930 and 1984, if they were in England and Wales. If Thomas is from Ireland, you may need to trace these through their registration system. Do you think Horace was perhaps born in England/Wales? The birth registration details may be available for free on Free BMD if it was around 1910-1925.
