Denise

Thanks for the PM - numbers could be any length -well I've seen 3, 4, 5, & 6 digits.

I've looked again on TNA and nothing for the various combos on the number

Does your friend know that he served in WW1?
Any children if so what are the dobs or yobs?

leesle Report 14 Apr 2008 17:39

Im looking again at this number and the tiny d is right over one of the 3s on his number maybe its a correction and is not a capital D but an o.
how many numbers should a private have
maybe it should read 3386301 or similar

The Herbert Graham who died in a/m/j 1916 is listed as being 32 and death is registered in Prestwich district. I would have thought that would have been the Herbert Graham who was born in 1884 in Manchester. However the only way you can be sure is to take a chance and order what you consider to be the most likely birth certificate. Or, if possible, go to look through parish records. Otherwise you will continue to go dizzy. Good luck, anyway.

Denise

Given that cert is of 1918 WW1 was still ongoing. You'd expect to find him listed in the Medal Index Cards - I've looked on TNA and can't find a card that looks 'right', with the number you quote and the RGD - are you sure its a D and not an A? Could be Royal Garrison Artillery
Whats the the writing like on the certificate - is it clear? I'd be happy to give a second opinion if you can scan a copy?
