Joan

I'm with you here - Margaret Smith (sorry to any out there but it sounds so unexciting) compared to Margaretta Emily Schmidt

She used Emily as her mother was Margaret

I’ll definitely look at the Fred in 1881 census

Many thanks again

Ah MB
So could it be from Margaretta (Emily) Scmidt to plain Margaret Smith ?????
I think Frederick A Scmidt is a dom serv. in Londons International college in 1881

Joan

Yes, that's them Emily is Margarette

I have this family on the 51, 61 & 71 Census but not found on the 1881 or 1891.
I know that they changed surname to Smith sometime before Emily's marriage in 1883. So they could be Smith on 1881. I haven't yet looked for Emily (Margarettes) siblings marriages but that may also narrow down the window of when they changed name.

Appreciate your help - many thanks

Am I looking in the right place ?
I have found the 1871 census of Julius and his wife Margarette and children in St George Hanover Sq. but there isn't an Emily b 1863/4. Trying to see if they were with extended family or visiting in 1891

The 1881 is not him - I know where he was in 1881 he was in Egypt he bought his way out of the army to marry Emily.

Yes that's their marriage in 1883 - I have the cert

Its specifically the 1891 census I'm interested in

Many thanks

Ummm - good question

Emily - she's of Prussian origan - Schmidt but they changed to Smith - so her marriage cert is Smith. I don't know where her parents were in 1891 - another mystery

Alfred - both his parents were dead

As a matter of interest; Alfreds mother Elizabeth is in the
1851 census as Dewbery
1861 as Dewling
1871 as Devenhay

I only found the 61 and 71 entries as its the address where Alfred was born Upper Charlton Street, Marylebone

Thanks to everyone

No Alfred Bone isn't the same person

Yes, they should be there - I have nothing to suggest they went overseas, the children born in London; Alfred & Emily (senior) married in London; the 1901 census has them living in Plumstead (SE London). But they’re nowhere to be found in the 1891 census - yes very frustrating.

Does anyone have any stats on % of missing info from 1891 census etc?

Many thanks

Also Alfred Bone, deaf & dumb upholsterer, is on the 1901 census.

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 18 May 2008 23:55

Alfred Bene is a deaf & dumb uphosterer. Alfred Dewberry is a labourer at the arsenal with no sign of being deaf & dumb. So I don't think so, but isn't it frustrating when you can't find them & know they should be there?

Ozi.
