" Roman myth, he is Favonius, the protector of flowers and plants"

being a botanist perhaps that is where his wifes name has come from!
From wikipedia
Zephyrus' Roman equivalent was Favonius, who held dominion over plants and flowers. The name Favonius, which meant "favorable", was also a common Roman name.

Have been talking to one of my Tully Cousins and he has been having the same problem finding this family. We both think he was probalby born in Lancashire and a mistake made on his death certificate when his children assumed he was born in the area they were. Can anyone find William with his parents in Lancashire??

freddie58 Report 9 Sep 2008 04:54

Hi Again Sylvia, I have tried looking for a birth in Lancashire, but can't find him. Bought some credits and tried looking at a few 1851 census trying to match with Bdm's from 1847 to 1849, but had no luck and ran out of credits, could not find William with parents listed on Death Certf. On his marriage certf he is listed as a Fireman and his father Joseph as a Coalminer (then as we discussed a Botanist on William's death certf) Have begun to think he may have been born in Ireland or ??? If only his date of birth had been listed on Death Cetf, we might have found him by now. Also wonder if name Tully might be mispelt on birth and earlier census. guess anything is possible with this one. Thanks for you interest, I'll keep looking.(and pulling my hair out)

I've just been looking throught this thread again.

On the 1871 Census that Tracy prosted as reference ...... it says he was born in Ashton-under-Lyme, Lancashire, and was living in Low Spenny Moor in Durham

1871 England Census
about William Tully
Name: William Tully

Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Sarah
Gender: Male
Where born: Ashton Under Lyme, Lancashire, England <<<<<<<<<<

Could that be why we haven't been able to find him .... because we;ve been using the wrong birth place???????????????

Still have not found out anything more on William with his parents. Beginning to think that despite it saying on his death certificate that he was born in Spinnamore (Spenny Moor??) England, that with the name of Tully, and with his mother's name being Favonius Fovye that maybe he was actually Irish or possibly Scottish??? I know Tully can be an Irish name, but any ideas on Fovye.

I did not realise they had emirgrated no mention in any posting till now ,that is why i cannot find any of them on later census, maybe his father had previousley been abroad before he was born and thats why we cannot find him with his wife.

Sylvia, thanks for the info on the botanist bit, seemed strange to me, but your explanation might be the answer there, as it was William's son that supplied the info on the death certf., and since he was an infant when they emigrated to Australia he probably never met his grandparents. Seems to be the problem that once they emigrated to Aus they never spoke about their families back in England.

Tracy, the witnessess were his father in law Robert Scott and Jane Scott, Sarah's sister. It does not say that Joseph is deceased, so presume he was alive.

I could perhaps explain the coal miner vs botanist conundrum

I come from the North of England, and through the 1800s, and even into the 1920s and 30s, it was very very common to find people in jobs such as coal mining or the cotton/woollen mill, who had taught themselves science, and become very well thought of amateur naturalists, botanists or zoologists ....... their fate in life was to work hard, their dream was out on the moors.

So he could very well have wanted to use botanist to describe himself.

OR it could be that the person who informed on his death only knew him in his amateur capacity as a botanist ...... after all, the information on any UK birth certificate is only as good as the knowledge of the informant.

As a personal story .......... the vicar of the last parish I lived in in England was probably the very last of the amateur naturalist priests. Being a vicar was very much a sideline for him!

He loved to be out on the moors, teaching young people geology and botany. In 1958, he discovered that I was specializing in Zoology and Botany at the high school. He used to visit the house regularly, bringing dried plant specimens for me to see. It actually turned me off botany, although I did eventually return to it.

In the 1980s, I met a well-known British plantsman visiting here in Canada .... and it turned out that he had been turned ONTO plants by this same vicar (in the parish he was in before he came to my town).

Hope thta this explains a little what might have hapened to your ancestor
