The other thing you could do is get James' birth cert. This will give you Walter's first "wife's" name assuming he made to the altar at least once!
It could be that wife 1 was still alive which would explain why we can't find a second marriage

I wonder if Elizabeth was married before, but for some reason put her maiden name on the child's birth cert?

I was thinking that I should get James' birth cert to see who was named as the mother and then see if there was a marriage anywhere.

I do think there is a high possibility now that wife wasnt dead and that is why there is no second marriage to Elizabeth.

That is a good thought about Elizabeth having a first husband and her marrying with that surname but putting her original maiden name on the birth cert.....then again, just checked the birth cert and Walter registered William's birth.

I know Huddersfield well as I worked there. Almondbury is near Berry Brow. Also Almondbury was originally the main area of Huddersfield and was a township in its own right. My hubby is from there and his ancesters sometimes put Almondbury as birthplace or sometimes an area within that.

Many thanks for that info Jennifer. It is hard when you dont know an area so I appreciate that info. Certainly all points to the same man on census....still deciding if i should claim him though lol.

Claire, like you I can't decide if you have the correct Walter and Elizabeth. I know it's not impossibe but Walter would have been 60 when your William was born in 1909.

Also what happened to Eliza c1886 as she is not on the 1901 census. Have you managed to find any record on birth index for Ernest or Albert? I haven't so far. One of their birth certs would certainly prove or disprove the connection. There is a big gap though between Ernest born 1894 and William born 1909

PS you will probably have to wait for 1911 census to come out as I am. I don't want to wish the years away but I wish it would hurry up and arrive!!

Many thanks again for your replies today. I know what you mean about Walter being 60 when William was born but his wife was 14 years aprox younger than him so she could have still had a child, it would certainly explain why at least William's father died when William was young lol.

I have tried to find Eliza too on the 1901 census with no joy, might be worth me checking if there is any death record for her. I think there may have been a couple more children who had died. Nan remembers William also having a sister called Lily (possibly Lilian). I have a feeling she was born between 1901 and 1909 as she doesnt show on either 91 or 01 census.

I so wish i could prove 100% this was my lot.

Claire, that is interesting about the school records and ties in with the birth indexes.

If you ordered one of the birth certs from GRO and specified the father's name as Walter King and the mother's name as Elizabeth Rowland, if it was the wrong one they would only charge you £3. Then at least you'd know one way or another.

I did my nurse training in Sheffield at the Children's Hospital and the Royal Infimary. I spent 4 happy years there when I was,young, free and single.

Thats what i thought too, i think they are certainly the two children on the censuses but are they mine?

I think i will order the birth cert for Ernest born 1893 as William's brother Ernest was the man who took him in when his parents both died...i really want this Ernest to be William's brother.

I love my hometown...I actually live in Manchester now, have done for the last four years for work and met my husband who lived here but I do miss Sheffield.

Claire, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, do let us know the outcome.

Looking back at the census returns for Walter in 1851 I see he was at Armitage Bridge. Parkgate is near there. I was a midwife and health visitor in Huddersfield and this was in my patch.

If you go to this website below and put Armitage Bridge into search box there are some old photos, also a good one of Parkgate, Berry Brow

Just have my lunch break and popped on and saw your replies.

I have got everything crossed that Ernest is my nan's uncle and that i can finally prove that Walter on all these censuse's is my nan's grandad.

I shall let you know on the thread once the cert comes to if it was the right family or not.

I will have a look at the website you have provided and thank both of you for the information re Parkgate and Huddersfield. I have never been to Huddersfield so do really appreciate the information.

If you have Google Earth Claire both Armitage Bridge and Parkgate show up very well.

There are some blocks of flats in part of Parkgate and then some older houses in front closer to the main road.

I think I do have google earth on my laptop at home so if i prove that this Walter was my great x 2 grandfather, I will have a look on there. Will be really good to see this area where he grew up.

Hi All

Just thought I would put a little update on as Ernest King's birth cert has arrived today:

It is my Earnest!! Parents Walter and Elizabeth King formerly Rowland, same as William. So have proved my Nan's uncle now and the family on the 1891 and 1901 census are my family.

Just now stuck again as still doesnt give me a marriage for Walter and Elizabeth....maybe they just lived in sin for all those years lol.

Claire, I'm sorry but I can't find a marriage for Elizabeth and Walter.
I have searched just using their first names up to 1894 (you wouldn't believe how many Elizabeths married Walters!!) just in case Elizabeth had been married before but to no avail
