Any idea of christian name and birth year

Sorry only just got back on the computer.
His name was Orridge. and I have got his birthdate and place of birth as well but thats all
I had heard that Ancestry was starting to do something on line but didn't know what information was needed

Flaming heck there are over 3000 hits just for Sherwood as regiment on service records alone

My uncle would very much like information on his fathers service in the first world war. All I know is that he was in the Sherwood Foresters (he survived the war by the way) Is it possible to get any further with just this information and if so could you tell me how.
