Squeaky020 Report 22 Jul 2008 17:02

Hi Yes that looks very much like it could be him!

I tried to find a marriage for George to find Henry's mother but had no luck.

I tried to find George & Henry together on the 1901 census but couldnt at all.

I also tried to find a birth for Henry - it states on his marriage cert in 1913 that he was 21 which makes it around 1892 he was born but cannot find a birth entry.

The only George Edgar Davison in the GRO:

Births Sep 1862
DAVISON George Edgar Hunslet 9b 205

The age would be a good match for being Henry's father.

If you're looking for info on Henry Davison -- do you have his marriage certificate? That would give you his age and his father's name, with luck. And with that you could maybe find him in the 1901 census, and that might give you info for finding a birth record ...

At FreeBMD, all you have to do is search for the marriage of

Davison
Henry
Hoare
Ellen

and you'll have the details for the marriage 1913 in Dover that you need to order that certificate.

Ellen in 1901:

Name: Ellen Hoare
Age: 5
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1896
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: David
Mother's Name: Louisa
Gender: Female
Where born: Bradwell, Essex, England

Civil Parish: Dover
Ecclesiastical parish: Hougham Christ Church
Town: Dover
County/Island: Kent
Country: England

but no way of knowing where to look for Henry, so the father's name is crucial.

Squeaky020 Report 21 Jul 2008 16:49

Yeah hopefully I will find something , I have some more certificates coming later in the week.

I am quite baffled with Henry Davison, with him being in the Great War , and it being stated on a birth cert that he was a company sargeant major for his regiment, I am very surprised how little I have found on him ! ( that includes birth & death mystery!)

hopefully something will be uncovered soon.

A Grahame E Rice is on the electoral roll 2002-2007.

http://www.192.com/search/search.cfm

I have the impression that quite a few people are withholding their info from publication for the 2008 electoral roll. (I know I would -- and in Canada it's actually a criminal offence to disclose personal info from the electoral list!)

I understand it costs an arm and a leg to get outdated electoral roll info at 192.com. I don't know whether anyone is offering lookups here at present -- you could post a specific request on the Records board.

One thing you could do is mess around at 192.com trying various counties as the location and see whether you can hit the right one. With that datum you might get a phone listing there, or you can go to

http://www.thephonebook.bt.com/publisha.content/en/search/residential/search.publisha

-- advanced listing, to include the initial -- and look.

I would certainly pursue the two marriages Seaham Lass found -- noting that Flossie married in Buckingshamshire as well.

Many thanks for your info,
will look into those marriages - though I found a Ruby Murray Death & it doesn't seem to match up to the birth date - maybe a different one though.

Will look into Helena....

I wonder if any of the Davison's had children ( I know Flossie & Joyce did ) though I do not know the whereabouts of Flossie's children - Christine & Grahame.

Someone must be alive somewhere with some info !!!!!!

doddsy1

doddsy1 Report 21 Jul 2008 15:29

Possibly worth investigating.....
Ruby Davison married Alexander W D Murray 1935, Surrey NE

Helena Davison married John W Wells 1936, Eton

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 21 Jul 2008 14:59

Only one Ruby with that birthdate in the deaths index:

Name: Ruby Olive Church
Birth Date: 4 Jan 1915
Death Registration Month/Year: Jan 2000
Age at death (estimated): 85
Registration district: Wayland
Inferred County: Norfolk
Register number: 42C
District and Subdistrict: 6431
Entry Number: 174

and there's a middle name that yours doesn't seem to have. It's always possible that your Ruby's death date was reported inaccurately when she died, if she has died. (It seems to be most commonly the year that's misreported rather than the date -- my grandfather, born in 1901, would have been recorded as born in 1900 when he died, since that was what he'd always believed, had he not had to get a birth cert when he retired in Canada in order to qualify for pension.)

I forgot to mentio that I seem to be a Hoare as well! My grx2 grfather born in Devon was Francis Hoar (later Hoare) Hill, and his brother was Stephen Hoare Hill, so I'm assuming his mother Ann was Ann Hoare. My theory is that she was from Cornwall, born in St Columb Minor but the family actually from around Linkinhorne; still working on that.

Had you investigated that WWI Cyril death before?

Squeaky020 Report 21 Jul 2008 10:38

Just to update & for a nudge for some fresh eyes...

I received Ruby's birth cert in the post this morning.

Here are the details:

Columns No. : 76
When Born : Fourth January 1915
Where : 9 Eric Road, Dover, K.D
Name : Ruby
Sex : Girl
Name of Father: Henry Davison
Name of Mother : Ellen Davison formely Hoare
Occu of Father : Company Sargeant Major, Kings
Own Royal, Lancaster Regiment.
6th Battalion
Informant : Henry Davison, Father, 9 Eric Road,
Dover.
When Reg : Seventh January 1915

Registrar : Walter E. Wright.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have looked for a marriage and death & cannot seem to find anything.

I do wonder if I can find any more on Henry with him being a Company Sargeant Major. I have found a medal card & Roll card . But cannot find birth or death.

Very strange.

The birth certs for the children will give their exact dates of birth.

If those are what you're waiting for, just post 'em here when you get 'em -- if you don't have Ancestry access, I or someone else can search the post-1984 deaths index in a few seconds.

The quick way to search for addresses is to go to google --

http://www.google.co.uk for you

click on "maps" in the upper left, then enter the address --

last lane, dover, kent, uk

Google's response in this case:

We were not able to locate the address:
last lane, dover, kent, uk

For "last" (in case it's now a terrace or a close or something), it gives only a residence that someone has named "At Last". ;)

There's also nothing close for

last lane, kent, uk

Just

Mary Last Close
Snodland, Kent ME6
UK

;)

If you just google

"last lane" dover kent uk

you get an Archives record referring to a Zion Chapel on that street.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?
CATID=-456410&CATLN=7&accessmethod=5&j=1

Aha:

http://www.doverhistory.co.uk/OriginofNames/km.htm

Last Lane - This Lane has often puzzled people, for is not the last of the lanes leading from Market Square into Snargate Street, but the fact of the matter is that the name should be Lass Lane, for in it was a Public House with an elaborate sign-board called “The Lass” which was taken down about 1776 and this later became the “Criterion Inn.”

That might help with some further googling. Unfortunately, google maps' response is still:

We could not understand the location
lass lane, dover kent, uk

but try Snargate Street and you'll get a map you can play around at.

I should be receiving some birth certificates tomorrow so hopefully that will unlock something.

I would appreciate it if anyone knows any Davison's that could possibly be related to these people or anyone with any knowledge on them - friend of a friend or anything, it would be really appreciated.

I know that the last two children - Flossie & Joyce were born at 13a last lane, dover, kent,
Does anybody know this area?
Does Last Lane still exist?

Honestly anything would be a help to try & break down the brick wall .

Thanks

Squeaky020 Report 20 Jul 2008 21:24

hi kathryn, thanks for your help

Your 1st suggestion sounds good and I would definitely like to follow that up!
I know his mothers maiden name is Hoare and he was born in 1924, so that rules that 1 out.

Does anyone have any idea where I can find out more info on Kathryn's first suggestion? It would be really helpful to find out next of kin &/or birth date???

Really appreciate any help!

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 20 Jul 2008 21:09

Oops. There's another candidate for that WWII casualty record.

Name: Cyril C Davison
Year of Registration: 1921
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Mother's Maiden Name: Parsons
District: Northampton (1837-1923)
County: Northamptonshire
Volume: 3b
Page: 131

and of course other plain Cyrils in the GRO births.

You might want to see whether you can find a marriage or death for either Cyril C Davison by scouring the GRO images, to rule one or the other out.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 20 Jul 2008 21:05

Do you have exact birthdates for the girls?

The post-1984 deaths index is searchable at Ancestry by given name + birthdate alone. It might be possible to identify possible matching deaths, if they died between 1984 and 2005, using that info. If a matching death were found, it would provide a surname to investigate.

Ruby
Helena
Hubert
Joan
Cyril

I tried searching for a death for Cyril, as I'm sure you have, but did not see one.

Ah, I wonder, though:

Name: DAVISON, CYRIL
Initials: C
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Gunner
Regiment/Service: Royal Artillery
Unit Text: 95 H.A.A. Regt.
Date of Death: 21/09/1943
Service No: 1536664
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Plot L. Grave 87.
Cemetery: CALCUTTA (BHOWANIPORE) CEMETERY

http://www.cwgc.org/debt_of_honour.asp

Actually, given the perfect match to the given name and initial, I might be fairly sure that's your Cyril.

Unfortunately this is one of the records that gives no date of birth or next of kin info.

Someone else here may be able to direct you to where more info can be obtained. If he was unmarried and childless (at the age of about 19, he presumably would be) and is a member of your family, you would probably want his death to be remembered, as my mother does for her uncle who died in WWI.
