Thanks Jill. I've had some fantastic lucky Ancestry hints today that have now taken me back to circa 1750 with the Spittle family!!! Lots of verified info with actual dates. It's amazing.

Thank you once again!

Best wishes,

Dear Richard + Jill,

Just wanted to let you know that you really helped me hit the bingo with this one.

I have now received:

Birth cert for my gr gr grandfather:
George Spittles (spelling surname with s!)
7 Feb 1872 Stoke Mandeville !!!!
Father: Barnett Spittles - Farm Labourer
Mother: Ann Smith

So Jill's marriage find is correct for Barnett & Ann. I will now request this so that I can go back another generation! Thank you so much.

Birth cert:
George Barnett Spittle
3 May 1901 - 3 Harcourt Street, Marylebone
Father: George Spittle - Railway Engine Fireman
Mother: Gertrude Jones
This means that my grandmother had a brother which she never spoke to my father about. I will now request his death cert. He died aged 16. Very sad that he has not been remembered until now. I wonder what he died of. I will know in another 2 weeks.

I also had a hunch that George b. 1872 had a sister Fanny who was married to a Joseph Dolby as these were witnesses at his wedding. I hit the bingo here too.

Birth cert:
Fanny Rebecca Spittles
13 Oct 1875 Stoke Mandeville
Father: Barnett Spittles - Farm Labourer
Mother: Ann Smith

Marriage cert:
Harry Joseph Dolby - 27 - Carman
Father: Joseph Dolby - Carpenter
Fanny Rebecca Spittles - 28
Father: Barnet Spittles - Labourer
Witnesses: Henry Spittle, Lucy Spittle + Ellen "Cropper"?
Fanny definitely had a brother called Henry. I don't see a sister called Lucy, so I suspect that this was Henry's wife. I will check on FreeBMD to see if I can find this marriage.

I just wanted to say a big thank you to you both for your great help and for you to be able to see how much information your help and tips have led me to find.

Best wishes,
Rebecca

Thanks Richard for the LDS submission and the double check in Ancestry. I'll indeed go with the George I've found once I've received the death cert which might give me more to go on. I'll let you know the outcome.

Best wishes to you and all who have helped on this post.

Richard, could I ask a big favour? Could you double check that birth reg find for George Spittles in Jun 1872 via Ancestry. I am unable to find in on the Findmypast original record scans either. I've just done another search on Ancesty and still no joy.

Thanks a million,
Rebecca

Rebecca Report 24 Jul 2008 21:06

Hi Richard,

No idea what I'm doing wrong on Ancestry. I am unable to repeat your Jun 1872 find for the birth reg of George Spittle(s). I find Ancestry really difficult for BMD searches, that's why I mostly revert to FreeBMD or Findmypast and then the manual search through all the original records (I've heard that Findmypast is more complete than Ancestry so I subscribed there too). I'll have a look through these manual records on Findmypast to see if I can duplicate your find. I will then have to guess which of the George Spittle(s) births in Wycombe might be mine the Mar or the Jun 1872 find. I'm thinking Mar as the 1901 census age would make him born in 1871 (maybe towards the end hence a reg in Mar 1872).

Many thanks for the death reg for Barnet.

I shall be clocking off for the evening as I'm an hour later than the UK. I'll check for any news that might be added tomorrow morning. I will let you know if my certs lead to a verification so that you will be able to celebrate with me ;>)

Best regards,
Rebecca

Hi Richard,

Back again..

May I ask which site you used for the birth reg you have traced for George in Jun 1872. Free BMD only shows the following when searching phonetically on Spittle in the whole of 1872.

Births Mar 1872 (>99%)

SOFTLY George Pancras 1b 156
Spittlehouse George Glanford B. 7a 686
Spittles George Sevenoaks 2a 541
Spittles George Wycombe 3a 522

Births Sep 1872 (>99%)

SPITTLE George Thomas W. Bromwich 6b 774

A separate search on FreeBMD with just the year/vol/page for the birth shows up the following for Jun 1872 - no George Spittle in sight..... so George just happened to be the missing 1%.......

Births Jun 1872 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Butler Thomas William Buckingham 3a 605
Davis Louisa Buckingham 3a 605
HILL Sarah Buckingham 3a 605
HOLMES Mary Georgiana Buckingham 3a 605
Juffs Anne Elizabeth Buckingham 3a 605
Justice Emma Buckingham 3a 605
PARKER Isaac Buckingham 3a 605
Rogers Elizabeth Buckingham 3a 605
Sear Joseph Cornelius Buckingham 3a 605

Rebecca Report 24 Jul 2008 20:40

Hi Richard,

I've traced a George SpittleS birth. Strange that the S is on the end as I don't see this on his marriage cert for his surname or his fathers surname.... but it could be the right one.

Births Mar 1872 (>99%)
-------------------------
Spittles George Wycombe 3a 522

I've also traced what looks like his brother Joseph:

Births Dec 1859 (>99%)
----------------------------------
SPITTLES Joseph Wycombe 3a 393

I also tried a search for Barnett Spittle(s) but looks like he was born prior to Sep 1837. I tried just using the surname and nothing comes up, not a George Barnett Spittle(s) or just George or just Barnett.

Okay - plan of action: I'll await the birth death cert for George Spittle that I believe is correct - Sep 1940 Hammersmith, then I hope it will verify his place of birth????? If it's Stoke Mandeville, I'll try the birth cert above.

Thanks to everyone who has helped me this evening and again, I hope I've not offended anyone with my "thinking out loud" methodology.

Best wishes,
Rebecca

Hi Richard,

Thanks for that extra search on the Weston front.

I've just found a Barnett Spittle in an 1871 census using Jill's tip on the Ancestry main search page of Spittle (surname) and Barnett (forename) and this looks like it could include Joseph again! We may be on to something, but I don't know what action to take next?

1871 England Census

I really need to trace my George Spittle b 1871 birth reg so that I can request his birth cert to find out what his mothers name was. I suppose this means I'm going to have to guess that Stoke Mandeville might be his place of birth and not Stoke Newington....

I haven't found a birth reg for the right district for Stoke Newington as this should be Hackney. So now I have to hunt for Stoke Mandeville. My handy registration district by town guide tells me that should be Wycome. So it's off a hunting I go.

Many thanks,
Rebecca

Thanks,
Rebecca

Jill,

Have found the following death reg for a George B Spittle:

Deaths Jun 1917 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spittle George B 16 Hammersmith 1a 339

This might be the George Barnett Spittle you have born in 1901 in Marylebone!! I'm pretty sure that George + Gertrude were in the Hammersmith district in their later lives.

I requested what I think may be George Spittle b1871's death cert on 20Jul08 and am still awaiting it:

Possible death:
Hammersmith, London, England
Description: BMD ref: Sep 1940 Hammersmith - 1A 372

If this turns out to be the correct death cert, then it might be worth investing the young boy George Barnett, in which case I am very greatful that you have found this as indeed it might be a relative.

Regards,
Rebecca

Jill,

No other doc other than the definitely correct 1901 census that states Stoke Newington. I've seen a real Spittle community in Stoke Mandeville on a lot of census material and I thought I'd hit the jackpot with Richards census posting when I found it 2 weeks ago. Maybe it still could be right. I found the Sarah Weston in it again though and she was NOT their mother as she had other children in another census (which I did not save....).

Rebecca

Rebecca Report 24 Jul 2008 19:42

Jill, regarding:

It's possible that George Barnett (1901) died young. In which case your father may not have known about him.
Jill

That's something I didn't think of. I will try to trace a deather of this George Barnett on FreeBMD to see if that might work out. Interesting thought. Only question I would raise is that his fathers middle name is spelt with a U = BURNETT and not Barnett. I've seen a lot of different spellings of names, so this might not be so out of key.

I'll let you know if I find an early death.

Thanks,
Rebecca
