Ethel, although it is now 12 years since the posts above, I suspect that we may be looking for the same, or at least related, people? My g-g-grandfather was Robert Christie Hunter, born 1849 or 1850 at Nigg, Kincardinshire (according to 1911 census). In the 1891 & 1901 census p-o-b is only given as Scotland. According to his marriage certificate (11th April 1881 at Tynemouth Registry Office) his father is Alexander Hunter, a Salmon Fisher. One of the witnesses was Elizabeth Hunter, but I don't know what, if any, relation to Robert or Alexander she was. I don't know who Robert's mother was, but I strongly believe that her maiden name was Christie, and her forename was probably Ann/Anne, based on the names given to Robert's children. Robert married Catherine Sinclair (whose mother's maiden name was Janet Anne Carmichael) in 1881 and they had 3 children: Catherine Janet Sinclair Hunter in 1883 born Woolston, Hants Anne Christie Hunter in 1884 born at Hull Ethel Susan Hunter in 1886 at Hull In 1891, 1901 & 1911 censuses they are all at West Hartlepool, where Robert died in 1914. In all documents I've found, Robert is shown as a shipyard worker - a plater. I've been unable to positively identify Robert or Alexander in any census earlier than 1891, though I did spot a possible entry for Robert, in jail in Southampton, in around 1882! All the places their children were born were shipbuilding areas, as was West Hartlepool where they eventually settled, so I'm assuming that he was moving around to where the work was. I have found other Hunters in West Hartlepool, also in the shipbuilding trade and living fairly nearby, which may well be siblings of Robert.........but I can't be sure of that without more info about Alexander and his wife and children. I've ploughed through many pages on various websites regarding Nigg, Fetteresso, and various other places in Kincardineshire to try to find Alexander, Robert and (probably) Ann but not yet found any that appear to fit. As you may already have discovered, there's LOADS of intermarriages between Christies, Massons and Hunters - when I finally get to that stage it'll be a whole new tangle to try and plough through! Hopefully you can shed a little light, being 12 years ahead of me? Thanks, Martyn

Thanks for helping. Good to now have the family dates of birth.
This may help me find out about Cocky Hunters[ Alexander Hunter and Davidina Jamieson] son Thomas born 1923 to see if he has any siblings and perhaps find some living family connection.
Regards

Sorry for late replies but I had to go out.
Thanks to you all who took the time and effort to do some searching for me.
I have since heard that perhaps the Hunter family came from the Muchalls [ Aberdeen/Stonehaven] area and were possibly from the salmon fisher folks.
Therfore it looks like the census records are correct.
Thanks
Ethel

Anyone able to help with census records for Aberdeen to check on Alexander Hunter and Ann Christie who could have been born around 1830.
Don't appear to be able to find a marrige for them on Scotlands people
All help regarding the family would be appreciated.
