Find Ancestors

my grandmother was married but i dont know her maiden name or date of birth,she married a frank powis who was born in 1914,her married name was freda may powis but i dont have her date of birth or anything,sadly she has passed away before i could ask her,is this an impossible one???? thanks,maxine

Not impossible but could be a long search unless you have an idea of when their 1st child was born

Buy the marriage cert to Frank Powis, this will tell you her maiden name and her age plus (hopefully) the name of both their fathers.

Did she die after 1984 in England or Wales., ..if so we might be able to find a record quite easily. This should show her date of birth and biirthplace.


A birth certificate for any of her children will show her maiden n ame.

Not impossible, but could be a long job given the time, you need to look for the marriage of Frank Powis by checking the BMD images quarter by quarter, year by year until you find a possible.

FreeBMD does not yet cover that period. Do you know of any children they had and when/where they were born? If you do you could look for their birth and find the mothers maiden name from that.

Second option to find her maiden name, it's your grandmother so her child (your mother or father) will have her maiden name on their birth certificate.

their two children were my father david john powis my father and his sister sue powis,but they were not real sons and daughters,they adopted them,thanks

she died in 2005 or 2006,thanks

my dad wont talk about the adoption,he was very hurt by it,his real parents left him in a box in a telephone box when he was very small or thats the story,i cant approach my father with this,maxine

Maxine, as I explained earlier, it could be a long job to search for the marriage of Frank Powis to a Freda May somebody. The death cert info will not give you the maiden name.

The death certificate itself should show her maiden name,.
The death index does not show this.
