I have reason to believe my grandfathersgreat uncle moved to America.

Alfred Nelson Varney was born on the 6th October 1878 in Wormley, Hertfordshire. Son of Alfred N Varney and Louisa Varney (nee Barnard)

There is a family story that a Nelson Varney moved to America as a missionary, my grandfather remembers getting a phone call in the late 1970's from a Nelson Varney (Alfreds son?) and we think this may all be connected to these records.

I found this record:

1920 United States Federal Census
Census & Voter Lists
View Image
Name: Alfred N Varney
Spouse: Anni E
Birth: abt 1879 - location
Arrival: year
Residence: 1920 - city, Hillsdale, Michigan

I was wondering if anyone could read the information on this record and tell me if it matches with mine?

There is also a Canadian soldiers of WW1 record 1914-1918 that I would like to see.

Thank you in advance.
Mandy

If you google his name, Mandy, there are a few hits. One of which has a photo of the tombstone of Rev. Alfred Nelson Varney. It gives his dob as 16 Oct. 1880 and death 15 Mar. 1924. is it him?

Just noticed you posted his place of birth as Wormley. I'm having trouble reading the second page of the immigration record. Margaret, do you have access to Ancestry?

Margaret, did you notice his attestation papers have a birthdate of Oct 7 1887, crossed off to read 1898.

While I have at least two rellies who lied about their ages (in order to fill out attestation papers), they didn't change the actual day of birth.

Hi Lisa,

Is there any mention of the two having any children?

Also, do you know how I could find what church he was a minister at?

I am so excited, we thought this guy was lost.
Thanks!!

Have you checked the sites Margaret mentioned?

I took a quick peek and he died in 1924. I am trying to see if they had children between the census in 1920 and 1924.

I'll keep checking Ancestry, but you might want to see if there are other sites that would mention more about his life.

Back to hunting... :)

I can't find anything yet on Ancestry.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi
You can search this site for Alfred's grave; it lists the full cemetery details. (I didn't check for Annie's.)

I wrote to a few cemetery offices in a town in Canada, explaining who I was and they kindly gave me my rellies'/ancestors' information. Perhaps the cemetery office in Florida might have records for Alfred Varney?

Keeping my fingers crossed that you receive a reply from Hillsdale.
