Hi Lorraine,

I presume your G Aunt Lillian has confirmed her DOB.
Couldn't find a marriage, same as Rose really, but found this;

Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Dec 1924 (98%)
-----
GASCOIGNE Ernest T Webb Lewisham 1d 1932
Webb Matilda L Gascoigne Lewisham 1d 1932

I noted your Grandfather died in the same area, did the family live there??

Lorraine Report 7 Sep 2008 01:01

I believe his brother lived in the same area but I dont know if or who he married so this could possible be his brother Earnest.

I am really baffled now?! it would seem that not only my grandfather but his siblings have been born under a different name, but I dont have anything to go on??? Confused!!

Hi Rose
Not really other than what is listed on my tree.

No-one in my family seems to know that much, I can start to understand why!

Do you know which town Lillian is in now? Perhaps I can find her on the electoral register to see if there's a middle initial.

I have some success and have found out that the father and mother of James Henry Gascoine are

Ernest Gasoine (c1876)
Emma Gatton (not sure on spelling) possibly Irish??

Siblings
Ernest Gascoine (c1920)
Renee Gascoine

Sibliings of Ernest
Uncle Charles - Shorham
Uncle Major (nickname)
Aunt Eileen

If anyone can find out where or when my Grandfather-James Henry Gascoine and Aunt Lillian Gascoine were born it would be of great help. I cannot find any records of any twins born during the dates

Does it give an age for James on his marriage certificate?

I'm a bit confused over the areas to be looking at Lewisham or Islington?

I cannot find a birth for Ernest 1920 or Renee.

Lorraine Report 7 Sep 2008 21:28

Hello Selena

The age of my grandad when married was 21
DOB 01/08/1917 The same for my aunt as they are twins. He died in Lewisham on 05/09/1984 his death cert says he was born in brixton but this doesnt seem to be true and the dates dont match up.
The family came from south london, brixton. I had been told islington but I dont think this information is correct.

Have you looked on FreeBMD for all the James born in those quarters, Sept and Dec 1917 in the right area? I will go and have another look for you.

Lorraine

Lorraine Report 7 Sep 2008 21:48

I have looked on various quarters for august in the years 1917 and 1918 but nothing, cant find any sets of twins born.
There is a possibility that the mother wasnt married so this would make the twins a Gatton???

Thank you for looking

I've been searching for James G* so hopefully it would come up under either surname. No luck yet FreeBMD keeps throwing me out.

Still nothing! I can only think that you might try an electoral roll lookup for the address that James was living at when he married, or any other addresses that Lillian can remember. Might shed some light.

Lorraine Report 7 Sep 2008 22:12

Thank you Selena for looking, this is just becoming more of a mystery than I thought.

I will try the electoral register but not sure if that was the family home when they got married.

Didnt think I would start hitting brick walls until further back! lol

Hi,

This may confuse matters even more??

Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Sep 1921 (93%)
-
Cook Violet E Gatton Lewisham 1d 2360
Gatton Ernest A Cook Lewisham 1d 2360

Obviously just grasping at straws now, however could the E be for Emma??

Hi,

Does G Aunt Lilian remember when her father and mother died? This may give us an idea of their ages if we could then find their deaths. Tricky family this one!!!

Found this but at the mo it's only guess work,

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Births Mar 1876 (>99%)
-

Hi Selena,

I saw that birth, but there doesn't seem to be a match for the twins, even if Emma had married before to a Gascoine.

Lorraine Report 7 Sep 2008 22:43

Not sure if thats the connection, as she was deffinatley with Ernest Gascoine, or so my G.Aunt has said.

Strange though as i live in Medway!!

Just thinking if this could be an adoption or something? apparently the Gascoine were quite wealthy with hotels in Brighton and Shorham.
My Aunt Lilly has said that although her and her mother (Emma) had to clean the house's my grandad was paid for private education at Archbishops Tenison School in London!!

All sounding a bit odd now?
