youre not going to believe this,my mum has just turned up and we have just been discussing J H Cross and have just said the very same thing, perhaps it is James Harrison and cross was just added to save face.Annie was in service in Bretherton near chorley when henry was concieved.Bretherton has been mentioned before regarding my grandfather Henry, so maybe that could be the next link.thanks again for your help.

No problem i get great pleasure from solving these mysteries lol
One more thought on the marriage certificate could Henrys father be James Harrison and not James Harrison Cross as we now think that the Cross came from Annie! There were several James Harrisons of Annies age living in Preston.
ps i do have access to all the census from 1841-1901 so if you ever want anything else looked up drop me a line - [email protected]

Marriage for Annie Cross and James Walter Langham JAS 1899 in Preston Lancashire. This makes the 1901 census that someone gave earlier correct and the Anthony living with the Langhams was Annies brother!

Angela Report 8 Sep 2008 11:08

Hi Judith
Ok Annie was born Annie Cross it lists her as being born 6/04/1874 in Clifton, Lancashire. Strangely it doesnt list her spouse but lists her daughter as Annie Langham born 19/08/1908 in Higher Walton, Lancashire and death as Jan 1985, Lancashire. Annie Langham married Thomas Counsell born 24/11/1906 in Higher Walton and died Oct 1997 Lancashire. They have living children.

1881 Census

Living in Newton with Scales, Lancashire
Ann Cross (Mother) c1835
Anthony Cross (Father) c1825 Farmer
Henry (Brother) c1859
Rowland (Brother) c1861
John (Brother) c1860
Elizabeth (Sister) c1868
Annie (Herself) c1874
Anthony (Brother) c1877

Marcus
you should start your own thread as what you are asking for isnt connected to this enquiry and it makes it confusing.

Angela Report 8 Sep 2008 10:45

Hi Judith
Not sure if this is of interest to you but while having a nose i came across a family tree on ancestry with a Annie Langham born 19th August 1908 in Higher Walton Lancashire and died January 1985. The tree lists her mother as a Annie Cross born c1874 in Clifton Lancashire. This person has Annie at age 7 living with her parents and the thing thats interesting is that ANNIES father is Anthony!
If you are interested in this one i can send you the rest of the info from the census other family members etc

The 1901 census image has Anthony Cross as boarder. Hy Cross listed underneath him as son - could it not mean he the is son of Head of family?

In 1881 census posted earlier Annie has a brother Anthony.

I feel Christine is correct in thinking James Harrison Cross may be ficticious

The birth reg I just gave you would suggest the mother was unmarried so could be your Annie Cross.

The 1901 for Henry which appears to suggest he is the son of Anthony has just been misinterpreted I think as Anthony Cross is single.

Maybe the James Harrison Cross as father on marriage cert was just invented to appear more respectable.

Hi susan, this is totally confusing,it does look like the name is anthony cross but cant understand why ive got a totally different name on the wedding certificate of my grandparents.Everything else after that regarding annie marrying James Walter Langham fits perfectly. The message from west country lass regarding mr.cross and family must be his marriage after him and Annie parted.Wow i cant get over how everyone has been so helpfull thanks to you all your marvelous, jude
