Hi Sylvia - have just checked the extra info you added and the query as to which Presbury parents are which. I agree that in all probability, it is Elizabeth who is Sarah's mother - she is the one living with Sarah on 1851 census together with John age 41 who I suspect is Sarah's brother John. Regarding Peter Belfield. Yes he was born in Belper, Derbyshire as stated on 1861 census. Once I found Sarah married to him on 1861 census, I decided to back-track Peter and found him on 1851 census living White Moor Hall, Belper with wife Hannah 33, and children Mary 8, Harriet 6 and Peter 2. Peter was born Mar Qtr 1949 and Hannah the wife died Mar Qtr 1849 - probably in childbirth. Unless I can prove different, I am happy with John and Elizabeth as parents. You folk on here have been absolute treasures and I am more than appreciative of your efforts. Thank you. |

Here they are in 1841, image looks like Pressbury, still doesn't help but it's the same area as Sarah in 1841 |

Thank you Sylvia for the additional IGI info. It looks as if they could well be mine as Sarah Presbury did marry Peter Belfield later but he certainly wasn't the father of Mary, Betsy or George. On 1861 census Betsy and George are described as step=children and Mary does not appear at all. I think that they are either (a) all illegitimate children of Sarah or - if we have misjudged her - children of her first marriage. If that was the case, it would make the old Elizabeth Presbury her mother-in-law and not her mother !! I don't suppose we will ever know and unfortunately I don't think I will ever find out who was Sarah's father. Anyway, thank you very much for your help. |

Christine and Sylvia - thank you so very much for your hard work. I have struggled with this for ages ! and Sylvia, I think you could be solved the mystery -perhaps she described herself as a widow to preserve her reputation !! even though she seems to have destroyed it twice over !! Bless you both for helping me. |
