The parents of John William HODGES were John Hodges and Charlotte

Bapt 25 Oct 1829 at Portsea
John Willaim HODGES s John & Charlotte

Marriage 04 June 1827 at Alverstoke
John HODGES
Charlotte PAIN

as I put previously Charlotte died 1831

John re married

16 April 1834 at Southampton
John HODGE w
Peninnah HAMBLEN

John died in 1835 (as in previous post)
there were no children

I wonder if the Elizabeth Hodges in the 1841 census with John 12 was his aunt-he would have been an orphan?

Hi Elizabeth,

LOL.....looks like I missed you again..had to go out and missed your post....

Nope....sure thats not right.
The problem being there were a number of John Hodges born around that time and sorting them is tricky...

Im sure I have it right.

John William Hodges 1830 parents are Henry Hodges & Elizabeth Ings
And he married Ann Hardiman...they had John William Hodges 1855 and daughter Elizabeth Emma Hodges 1858.

John Hodges 1830, Im sure had a brother George 1818 and a sister Elizabeth 1813..plus numerous others. His daughter, Elizabeth Emma Hodges 1858
Is my Grt Grandmother.

I after sorting John 1830's family..parents and siblings....which Im sure are Henry Hodges & Elizabeth Ings..just want to make sure it's right and I have all siblings.

CRIPES_A_MIGHTY Report 23 Oct 2008 15:41

So if Henry Hodges died 1825, then the children born after that must come another marriage of Elizabeth Hodges (nee Ings)?

CRIPES_A_MIGHTY

CRIPES_A_MIGHTY Report 23 Oct 2008 15:45

Ok here are ALL possible children of Elizabeth Hodges (nee Ings) from possible 2 marriages.

Elizabeth Hodges 1813, George Hodges 1818, John Hodges 1829
Elizabeth 1816, William 1821, Martha 1822, James 1823, Hannah 1833.

Though I sure the second Elizabeth 1816 is the 1813 one above it.

Making :

Elizabeth 1813, George 1818, William 1821, Martha 1822, James 1823, John 1830, Hannah 1833.

John 1830, Hannah 1833 coming from a possible second marriage.
OR!.....born out of wedlock... hence they keep the Hodges surname?

I am not sure I can help much more with this one!

I think to be sure of which John Hodges married Ann Hardiman you would need the marriage certificate-I cannot remember if you said you had that?-to get the father's name.

The John b (according to the 1861 census) 1830 could be John s Henry & Elizabeth bapt 1832
or
John William s John & Charlotte bapt 1829

George 1818 on the census could be George bapt 1817 s Benjamin & Elizabeth

There are the 2 Elizabeths bapt in 1812
1) d Benjamin & Elizabeth bapt Mar 1812
2) d John & Sarah bapt Dec 1812 although I think this may be the one buried 04 June 1814 age1

I wonder if the Eliza d Henry & Elizabeth bapt 1815 became an Elizabeth and be the 1816 one you have?

There are no baptisms for a Martha in the Index
or a Hannah c 1833 or a James c 1823 or a William c 1821

though there is a buriel for a Hannah 20 Dec 1829 age 2 and an Elizabeth 10 June 1834 age 10 and 2 John's
05 Apr 1832-John Hodges age 1
15 Jul 1832-John Hodge age 1 (? s Thomas & Jane IGI)

All the above relate to Portsea

However the Index does not cover the Non Conformist Registers or the Isle of Wight

Cheers Elizabeth for your time and effort!.

Its a most perplexing conundrum.
I'll get there in the end I'm sure..with luck.

With so much info it's still hard to sort.
Where as with others in my tree, I have nothing at all to go on!

I know nothing of my grandfather and grt grandfather on my mothers side.
And almost nothing on 3 grt grandparents on my fathers side.

Dead ends..

This geneology can be a real headache!

Many thanks again for your time and efforts Elizabeth
I have at least something to go on..

Regards & Cheers!
Paul

Hi Folks,

Update on this post...one of my first here!.

I have now brought the marriage cert for John William Hodges & Ann Hardiman.
My Grt Grt Grandparents.

UNFORTUNATLEY!....it hasn't helped.

John's father is down as John Hodges - Carpenter, Ann's father, James Hardiman - Shoemaker.

Johns a Butcher.

John was living at 3 St.Mary Street, Portsea...and Ann, London Road, Portsea (no number given).

Witnesses no help....names appears not to be of the family. Elizabeth Burrows & Robert Fyres ?

I am trying to find out who John's parents & siblings were.

So...we have John Hodges as father...BUT!.. it looks like he may have died before 1841.....as I cant find him in any of the censues.

I think this is John with a possible mother Elizabeth in 1841 census.

Now....looking at this is suggests John had a brother (cousin?) George & sister Emma. Though is saids George is a boarder in the 1861 census, and Emma is a daughter in 1891...but the age points to her being a sister..not a daughter...or cousin?.

The marrige cert for John has not given me any more thanI already knew...so it was a waste of money..... Shame marriage certs dont show the mothers name also.....would make such a difference.

So...looking for Johns mother and possible siblings..especially a posbbily sister Elizabeth born c1813.

This I believe is cousin and or brother George with Elizabeth in 1881.

Says George is brother-in-law.....so brother to Elizabeth.

This could be them with parents Benjamin & Charlotte...NOT John..

ELIZABETH HODGES
Christening: 12 MAR 1812 Saint Marys, Portsea, Hampshire, England
Parents:
Father: BENJAMIN HODGES Family
Mother: ELIZABETH

GEORGE HODGES
Christening: 04 MAY 1817 Saint Marys, Portsea, Hampshire, England
Parents:
Father: BENJAMIN HODGES Family
Mother: ELIZABETH

Possible earlier child who probably died..or this is Georges birth wrongly registered.

Elizabeth Capper in 1891 shows even more possbile siblings!.

JOHN WILLIAM HODGES

Father: JOHN HODGES Family
Mother: CHARLOTTE

Possible parents marriage:

JOHN HODGES
Marriages:
Spouse: CHARLOTTE PAIN Family
Marriage: 04 JUN 1827 Alverstoke, Hampshire, England

BUT!!!!!!.....In 1841...John is with his mother and her name is Elizabeth NOT Charlotte.

I have been thinking....there is a Charlotte marrying a Benjamin Hodges
And John Hodges marrying Elizabeth Pain..and that Charlotte & Elizabeth are sisters and John & Benjamin are brothers.

Any ideas would be most welcome. So am looking for Johns mothers and possible sister who married George Capper.

Thanks :)

Hi Boogie,
I don't know why I stopped to look at your request for info on John Hogdes Portsea 1841. But it must have been a pychic connection ! I noticed that Henry Hodges married Elizabeth Ings b. 1795 Soberton to Henry and Ann Ings.................I believe she may be my grx4 grandfathers sister ! He was John Ings. Sorry can't help with fathers name for John Hodges but I can do a look up at our local records office if you like ............for Hannah and John's father. St Marys Portsea is Cof E , St. Johns Portsea is RC. There maybe a clue there?
Pam

There were just two baptisms for a John HODGES at Portsea in the Hampshire Baptism Index

25 Oct 1829-John William s John & Charlotte
22 Apr 1832-John s Henry & Elizabeth (this would be Henry Hodges & Elizabeth Ings who married 12 Dec 1814 at Portsea)

They also baptised
02 Jun 1816-Henry
21 May 1821-Ann
12 Dec 1829-Hannah

no George, but as Paul has said George was the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth ( nee Kelmsley) HODGES-bapt 04 May 1817

Hi Folks..

Thanks for taking the time to take alook...I was hoping the cert might give me a clue...but nope.

Its a total mishmash!....I just cant find the clue to solve the problem.

See John has a mother named Charlotte...

JOHN WILLIAM HODGES
Christening: 25 OCT 1829 Saint Marys, Portsea, Hampshire, England
Father: JOHN HODGES Family
Mother: CHARLOTTE

But in 1841...
His mothers name is Elizabeth!....
And shes a widow......so his father died before 1841....

But his mothers name was Charlotte?...

This is his parents marriage...I think...

JOHN HODGES
Marriages:
Spouse: CHARLOTTE PAIN Family
Marriage: 04 JUN 1827 Alverstoke, Hampshire, England

So why is his mother Elizabeth in 1841?

Also..there are all thse siblings coming from?...George, Elizabeth Thomas..etc?
Their parents appear to be Benjamin & Elizabeth!

ELIZABETH HODGES
Christening: 12 MAR 1812 Saint Marys, Portsea, Hampshire, England
Parents:
Father: BENJAMIN HODGES
Mother: ELIZABETH

GEORGE HODGES
Christening: 04 MAY 1817 Saint Marys, Portsea, Hampshire, England
Parents:
Father: BENJAMIN HODGES
Mother: ELIZABETH

So...did Charlotte & Benjamin died and John marry Elizabeth?

I just dont know. :-(

The above bapts for Elizabeth & George above, match those of those in the censuses.....so they must be related...but yet different parents!..

Ho Hum!
