Well they lived at 42 Cromwell Street on the baptism record - they are not there in 1901 however. I've found 4 Thomas Cooks living in Aston Manor on the 1901 census and none are him. Electoral lists in that period are scarce too. The 1911 census may hold the answer - I'll be looking to see where the Hunts were living too as I have a huge gap between 1906 and 1919. They were living in Oxygen Street for a number of years.

Thomas and George look like it says wid.

George looks something like Tester tube maker
Thomas looks like Groom.
Don't know who Thomas 4 belongs to.
Will look on 1891 census to see if Thomas was a groom then.

David Report 25 Oct 2008 19:43

On the baptism record, Thomas Cook Snr is listed as being a tube drawer (extruding pipes I think).
The only Hunts I know of are:
Alice Hunt (married Horace Field) 1896 - 1968
Ellen Hunt (my gran) 1898 - 1972
Rose Harriet Hunt (1900 - 1901)
William Henry Hunt (1906 - 1980)

Of these, only Ellen and William have living descendants. Alice's children never married. Her last remaining son died last year.

Gt Grandparents Charles and Harriett Hunt are proving a puzzle too - I cannot find a marriage for them. Harriett died in November 1919 aged 58. Charles died in January 1942. Both were buried in common graves at Witton. Using their ages from death certificate and the 1901 census, Harriett was born in 1860/61 and Charles in 1864/65. The problem is that there are no Harriett Taylors in Worcestershire and 2 Charles Hunts in Birmingham.

jansmith Report 24 Oct 2008 18:41

Hi David just looked up the birth index for Ellen Rose and it gave mothers maiden name. Have since seen the marriage index for
Name: James Cook /May Hunt
Year of Registration: 1917
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
Spouse's Surname: Hunt
District: Birmingham (1837-1924)
County: Warwickshire
Volume: 6d
Page: 313

so think that must be their child.
Don't suppose they could be related to your Cook/Hunt?

Do you know if your grandfather was in WW1 to look for his army records

David Report 24 Oct 2008 14:38

Janice, Ellen Rose Cook was the first born as far as I know. There may have been miscarriages but there was never a James Cook. All births of aunts and uncles are in the family bible. The first son was called Thomas John William Cook (1928-1929). By the way, how did you know my grans maiden name was Hunt?
As for my granddads D.O.B., my dad and his eldest brother were both aware of it being the 16th March 1898. The baptism record just confirmed it.
So my late gran was born Ellen Hunt on 27/02/1898, second daughter to Charles and Harriett in Worcester. Moved to Birmingham around 1899.

so David is the dob for Thomas from that baptism that you guessed could be him or a family member who knew the date?

David

David Report 24 Oct 2008 12:04

Thats her - I know, no next of kin mentioned on her death certificate. Her name is on a memorial for civilian victims in the Bull Ring.
The refunds come at the register office - I have acquirred most from there. The only ones I've acquirred through post are from Dudley (William Murray's death - Esthers older brother) and my gran and gt aunts births (Worcester)

My gt grandad Thomas Cook is listed as a Plasterers Labourer. My grandad is listed as a cycle worker. However, my granddad is listed as a plasterers labourer on the birth certificate of Ellen Rose (first born).
My grandparents were married at St Georges, Newtown, Birmingham on 4th August 1919. Leah was married at the same church on 19th August 1919 to Edwin Murray. My grandparents lived in the north of the city until June 1939 when they moved to the south. My grandad died 13th August 1952 aged 54 when my dad was just 10 (he was the youngest of 11). My gran died 1st August 1972, just 5 1/2 years before I was born.

If the one above is Esther and Thomas' child then you will need to look again for your Thomas .Is the dob you have, been given to you from family members or the date you have got from the baptism? There is also a marriage for an Esther Cook in 1900 so i wonder if her Thomas died and she is married again that is why she is not on the census in 1901 as Cook

David

I think you only get a partial refund from the GRO if they cannot supply a cert that fulfills your checking criteria.

David

David Report 23 Oct 2008 12:18

The Leah death certificate showed a wrong informant - a daughter by the name of Walker. Leah had 2 daughters - Rose who married Arthur Woolley and Esther - who was killed in an airraid in 1942.
As for my granddad, I did apply for a certicate using the D.O.B. I had and they have no records of anyone with that date. I know my granddad never really used his middle name - it only appears on the birth certificate for his first child. On his marriage, death and all other birth certificates, he is plain Thomas Cook.
As for acquirring certificates, you pay up front and if the search draws a blank, you get a full refund.
