I think i am getting it but could someone confirm it. I believe that Catharine's mum was also called catherine and her dad was called james and they also had a son called Thomas. Is this right and do i need to add anything else to my tree

If you read Erics 1861 census it may be that Catherine (Cath) Walby married ?? Straffin and then married William Smailes.

The information i have is that William married Catherine Walby then he married Isabella Mudd and he had 9 children. Which i think i wrong and is where i am getting so confused

If the family on the 1841 census is correct then Jane was 5 years older than Thomas (approx 1803 & 1808).

Since they married in 1832 (a year after William was born) William would have been Janes son and possibly not Thomas's.

He would therefore be your ancestors step-brother. He may even have been christened Aynsley.

The William who is the brother of James was born in Northumberland............so he is not likely to be the one who says he was born in Tanfield
