Sharon, just a guess I'm afraid. I too like Julia have been wondering if Florence could have been married before or even married at all. As I can't find a marriage for them in those names.
Have you actually seen your grandfather's birth cert? Who was the informant? The registrar would just write down what he was told, you don't have to actually produce a marriage cert.

Sorry can't be more help, Jennifer

Athena could I ask where you found this that you posted earlier:
Florence Mills - Edmonton - 1910 - Mar qtr - 3a 640 as I can't find it at all on Ancestry

Belle
I havent seen the cert, my aunt has a copy and she gave me the details over the phone, we live 250 miles from each other, maybe she could send me a copy? All she was able to tell me was grandands dob, where born and the names of his parents. My mum gave me the details of the siblings and unfortunately Nobby is all anyone has for the eldest boy.

RB - re your query - It's not on the transcribed entries on Ancestry - you have to look on the actual index pages.

Athena, I have done that but no Florence Mills with marriage at Edmonton only Manchester

Ooooh - big OOOPSIE - the surname was Miller not Mills.

Checked on the transcribed section for Florence Miller to see who she is paired with but she's stuck on a page on her own.

Could be that her surname was written/transcribed incorrectly on the index?

Still the marriage for Arthur White in Edmonton 1910 is definitely one that I would order if it were me just to satisfy my curiosity.

Athena, thanks for that I thought it was my eyesight, doing too much looking at indexes. Just done 3 pages of transcribing for FreeBMD.

Yes Sharon could send for that Arthur White marriage and ask for a ref check on wife's name, then if wrong it would only be £3 and not £7

Well, I wouldn't put a ref check for the name Florence Mills just in case it has been written on the cert as Miller (or it might look like Miller in that old handwriting).

I know it's a gamble but sometimes those gambles do pay off.

There isn't another Arthur White marrying in Edmonton at that time - and 1910 would tie in with the Arthur from the 1901 census (again Edmonton) turning 21yrs so it's a strong possibility.

For all we know, the eldest child "Nobby" may have been from a previous marriage or encounter of Florence before she married Arthur. Or they may have had a child prior to getting wed (if they wed at all).

Sharon - these are just our thoughts on it and seeing as you don't have a lot of solid info to go on it's going to be a case of searching and ordering certs like this, until you strike the jackpot and find one that fits.

Regards - Athena

My late brother in law was known as 'Nobby'......his given names were Arthur Henry.

First-born sons were frequently named after their fathers..................
