It comes with practice - It takes a couple of years and a lot of time and effort but once you become 'addicted' you start to 'feel your way' around the mistranscriptions and mis-spellings (and downright lies!!) on census's and start to knit the clues together.

I think this is him on 1841 census, note Mother Phoebe, he had a daughter of same name. Lookiing on actual census I would say it is Sprout not Sproat
