OK. The death of the first John and birth of the second John makes sense. It explains why "My John" shaved 10 years off his age.............lol

So it looks like you're right and my John married Catherine Hall who died in 1864 and then Elizabeth Caruthers in 1866.

I'm going to order the marriage certs of John who married Ann Sharp (he probably is a cousin) to find out who his father was and I'll also order the marriage cert to Catherine Hall to confirm that he's my John.

The John Burridge above died on the 9th October 1817...it's noted next to his Christening record.

That may be why they had another son named John born c1828. (Can't see a Christening record for him on the IGI).

Can't find John born c1821, who is married to Ann, on the 1841 though.

Ohhhhh...........................fantastic! There was two brothers after all. One with wife Ann in 51 and the other one at home with William and Abigail in 51.

So, the one at home in 51 went on to Marry Catherine and then Elizabeth in Liverpool.............I think. It's all so confusing because we have two sons called John in two generations!

I'm really starting to think that there were two brothers called John.

Is it possible to find the younger John who went on to marry Catherine in 1852? He may still be living at home with parent's William and Abigail in 1851.

So James Hy Burrow in 1861 may be your John H Burridge in 1871.

Edit: No, the John H Buridge shown with mother Catherine must be the right one, as James died in 1864....see later posts.

I see what you mean. What I can't understand is why this John ended up with William living with him in 1871. William is definately mine!

William Burridge was married to Abigail and they had a daughter Mary who married my 4xg/grandfather Robert Sharp. Robert's sister Ann Sharp married Mary's brother John in 1842. (Yes, I know. 2 siblings marrying 2 siblings. Does wonders for the tree).

Ann Burridge nee Sharp didn't die until 1870 so she should appear in 1861 with husband John. They must be two different John's.


Aha! Thanks for that. You were one step ahead of me! The 51 census is my family. There's Johnathan junior with them. But he's also got a younger brother called John!


It seems the family had a habit of doubling up on forenames. I wonder if the 2 John's (John and Ann and John and Catherine/Elizabeth were brothers?

I do suspect that he was a stepson so that might explain things. Can you see if you can find John with his first wife Ann Sharp? They should be in Whitehaven, possibly St Bees or Egremont.
