Thats a real shame Eric as your help on here will be duly missed..... maybe GR could enlighten us ALL as to what is acceptable to post and what isn`t in plain English.... not just the legal jargon in the Ts and Cs.

Well, Ancestry and GR will both be losing my subscription money.

I use both sites only to help others.......I have absolutely no need of either of them for my own research

So what about copying and pasting from free sites?

ie.......freebmd and the IGI? Is that acceptable ? or do we have to put it in our own words for that as well?

I wish that Ancestry could see how many times members on GenesR recommend that people take up the Ancestry 14 day free trial and I wonder how many subsequently take out a subscription.....we've been advertising the Ancestry site for free...wish I'd been on commission !

Ancestry are well within their rights to complain to GR as someone has already suggested. GR would then have a legal obligation to ensure that all their subscribers are aware of this.

It's a pity as posting Ancestry details on GR in my humble opinion does encourage people to take out a subscription with Ancestry.

Perhaps Ancestry are worried that they are losing subscribers. This however could be down to their recent pricing policy changes when they increased their charges in return for access to less information?.

I would think that people can still ask for information.

It is the transfer of the info (as in copy and paste) that is not really allowed and it does seem to have grown lately!

Thanks LD. I have to type all my info out as I am unable to copy & paste from my info

Thanks

Marcelle, there is no reason for look ups to stop. As I said earlier, what you cannot do is quote the info you find verbatim. (ie copy and paste) You have to rewrite it.

LD

LD Report 15 Nov 2008 13:15

Pam, yes that is correct. Most websites will have that in their T&Cs.
If you quote a website address without their prior consent, that is an infringement.

Marcelle

Marcelle Report 15 Nov 2008 13:14

A majority of this board is people asking for look ups..Do you think it will have to be closed down then?
That would be a shame as I have met tons of nice people on here

I suspect Ancestry have complained to GR!

It is fairly recently that someone on one of the threads posted the info that when they telephoned Ancestry re the huge increase in subs they were told it was because of people offering "look ups" in this country.

I notice on Family Tree Forum people are talking of renewing their Ancestry subs through Aus and NZ which is much cheaper.

Maybe we should all sign up to transcribe for freecen. I can't at the moment as I transcribe for freebmd and am also transcribing parish records for my own parish so don't have much free time but hope to be able to next year.

No you only infringe copyright if you copy verbatim. If you put the details in your own words that is ok. To republish facts that are widely available (ie on a website) does not infringe any laws.

What if info was pmd, would that be able to be tracked?and if you dont paste but only put the names, birth year and place of birth so people can look up themselves would that be an infringment of the copyright?

A little bit confusing reading section 11.

I at first thought it was referring to info contained in your own tree
