Someone here at GR has a Henry Clayton born 1779 in Yorkshire in her tree.

Might be worth a contact to see whether she knows anything more about hers!

But remember -- the info from the IGI was submitted by someone, and it could be completely wrong. It could also be the result of someone seeing the actual parish record and misreading the surname themselves.

If you can check out the Yorkshire parish records, that might settle it!

Me too.

Syvia three, I'm sure!

Do you have any way of scanning it and uploading it somewhere we could look at it, or emailing a copy?

If you got it at ScotlandsPeople, I imagine you can save the image as a file and you could email it (we can give you email addresses by private message).

I'm often pretty good at deciphering things, for one.

Geordie - out of interest, could you have another look at the mother's maiden surname on his death cert - the one that you first thought looked like ESERTOT. I'm curious to know whether you think now that it could be CLARKSON, given the above info!

cheers,
Richard

I'm having some server problems ............ it will only let me open one internet site at a time, so I can't switch from here to any of the other sites. I usually have at least 4 sites open all at once!

Heh, Sylvia. When I said "I just went there", I meant the website, lol.

Right after reading this thread, I went to the site and found, I think, my 3xgrandfather being discharged from the army in 1821.

Even the ever-bored other household occupant was impressed by that. He started to glaze over as usual, and then said Wow, that's almost 200 years ago! Then I told him about the parish records back to 1550 for one of my other lines. I think it was the details from 1821 that impressed him though -- an ancestor who would likely have been in the Napoleonic Wars -- just like Geordie's. That's something to notice.

Evie ... you might be right, a visit to the Archives might be in order ...............another day though!

As a matter of fact ... I just went there, and found in the Records of the Royal Chelsea and Kilmainham Hospitals a fellow who I am pretty sure will be my father's father's father's mother's father ...

Thank you ever so much for inadavertently telling me that!
