Well me too!

I wasn't really onto anything. I would have clicked on by ... Scotland, hmm ... except for Sylvia.

Sylvia started it, mummy!

And I think both Sylvia and I should think about the Archives occasionally. I was just messing around there this very afternoon ...

Anyhow, really bad transcription of Clarkson was all I could think of!

Well done!

You could be on to something, EvieBeavie - there is this record on the National Archives catalogue for a chelsea pensioner:

WO Records created or inherited by the War Office, Armed Forces, Judge Advocate General, and related bodies
Division within WO Records of the Royal Chelsea and Kilmainham Hospitals
WO 97 Royal Hospital Chelsea: Soldiers Service Documents
Subseries within WO 97 1760-1854: discharge papers arranged by regiment, but each described at item level. (WO 97/1-1271)
WO 97/162 Foot Guards: Clar - Col

Record Summary
Scope and content HENRY CLAYTON
Born NOTTINGLAY, Yorkshire
Served in 1st Foot Guards
Discharged aged 35
Covering dates 1803-1814

... the covering dates are the years that he served, so if discharged at aged 35 in 1814 then he was born c1779 which ties in with the christening you found in Aberford. I can't find a place in Yorkshire called "Nottinglay", but presumably it could be Knottingley, which is less than 10 miles from Aberford.

Could "ESERTOT" be a *really* bad transcription for CLARKSON, perhaps?

By the way, Geordie - if you decide that this is the right Henry, you can order a copy of his service records from the National Archives.

If he is that 1841 Henry Clayton, he could be this one in the IGI:

HENRY CLAYTON
