Brenda

most of those helpful threads, tips etc have disappeared for a couple of reasons.

One was that several of the old time helpers got so fed up with disparaging remarks that they left GR, and a couple of them removed their threads. Some threads do still remain, and are occasioanlly nuged to the front, as Claire has just done with Old Crone's thread on tips.

Another reason is that several newer helpers have started helper threads, but there was a barrage of disparaging remarks a few weeks ago that have driven those threads off the front of the boards.

We got fed up of nudging tips threads to the tops of the boards, only to have nasty remarks directed at us (along the lines of who did we think we were telling people what to do).

It's a great pity because GR does not provide any tips to help people best use this site, nor do they tell people that GR does not provide any help. There are lots of newbies who believe that all the information asked for on these boards is researched by GR staffers!

Rant over!

Hi Mary,

When I first came on here a long time ago now. I was very green but there was a lot of useful messages on the boards to help newcomers, lists of web addresses to start people off on their searches. I just think its a shame that these have now disappeared. I found them very useful when I was a newcomer,
and can I just add that I was very grateful for all the help I was given in the begining including the help you also gave me.

Colin

Just to add to what Julie has said, freebmd is a voluntary organisation that is transcribing the BMD indices. It is an ongoing project which hopefully will eventually cover 1837 to 1983. The indices give you the basic info and the reference numbers needed to order certificates from the GRO (General Records Office).

As to its reliability, it is transcribed from the originals and as some of these are quite difficult to read, it is always a good idea to look at the images available just in case the transcriber has made a mistake.

You also need to remember that birth registration wasn't compulsory until 1875 so births before that may not have registered. Also, as it is compiled from the returns sent from local Registrars, sometimes entries were omitted - returns may have been lost in transit and the compilers of the indices sometimes made mistakes or left out entries.

Can I suggest that anyone new to the site reads all the info on the homepage before they start searching.

Hi Colin

This is the site http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

It covers Birth, Marriages & Death in England & Wales from 1837- to about 1930 depending on the name

Hi, I always use Free bmd first, and although I am not dim and have been doing this for several years now, but sometimes I can't find a rellie on there either, so ask for help.

It always amazes me when they find them on the same site I couldn't. I'm not sure why that is, I often wonder if it's a turn around thing like the mormon site or if it's the amount of users at peak times or another possibility which I've recently discovered, it can be the way it's searched.

I would search using the info I knew for certain, sometimes I have only filled in the christian name and left surname out, and hey presto found what I was looking for.

So please don't assume it's because we're lazy, it can be a number of reason's why we can't find them, that's why we ask and why very kind and generous people on here offer their help.

Regards and thanks to those who have helped us all, your time and efforts are really appreciated.

I think saul is totally unfair, still there is always one who is not satisfied. The helpers are doing a great job, they helped me start a new lead after hitting a wall. keep up the great work, and remember, it's in thier time, and they deserve a big thank you, so to all of you, thank you again.
