Hi
Did this Samuel Reddington have a brother James George ? I have JG in my ancestry but can not confirm his parents were Susan Wingrove and another JG. If so, there appears to be a Samuel brother born about 1874

No prob, Marie -- you did try! The new "improved" site has just made it more difficult for new people to use.

Do search trees here -- the button near the top, third from the left. Just search for the surname Hersey-Walker.

Then you click on the "Find out more" button (which also makes no sense) next to the name of the person who has the Hersey-Walker in his/her tree -- some people have more than one, and some Hersey-Walkers are in more than one tree. Send a brief explanation of your relationship and see what they can tell you!

Marie, you're welcome, but you gotta reply in the thread!

"He was a carman" -- I had to scratch my head to figure out what *that* was about!

Look at the top of the thread. click the purple Reply button. A box will open (surprise! nobody tells you that, do they?!) and you can type your reply in there and click Submit.

Hope this all gets you somewhere!

Google Hersey-Walker -- there are two people on Facebook with that surname. That would be a quick way to get in touch!

And actually there are several in people's trees here at GR -- including William 1879.

Deaths since 1984, for info:

Edward Hersey-Walker 15 Mar 1915 Jul 2004 89 Bromley Kent

John Hersey-Walker 24 May 1917 Feb 2001 83 Greenwich London

Violet Grace Hersey-Walker 23 May 1912 Apr 2004 91 Hounslow London

Also marriages of David and Stephen in Kent, and two births and another with mother Hersey-Walker.

EvieBeavie Report 22 Dec 2008 19:35

Well anyhow, it certainly looks like the surname was a combination of Hersey and Walker -- whether from adopting a stepfather's surname and/or being born before the mother's marriage, etc.

So Catherine was registered as Hersey when she was born, married as Hersey, and used Walker as her surname when the children's births were registered.

Now to solve the Hersey + Walker puzzle, except I have to do some real work!

EvieBeavie Report 22 Dec 2008 19:32

So, then there are these -- children of that William marriage (and the only results for Hersey-Walker at FreeBMD):

Births Sep 1911

Births Jun 1917

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 22 Dec 2008 19:25

Here's an interesting one:

Marriages Jun 1903
Giles Priscilla Southwark 1d 115
Plant Lillie Southwark 1d 115
>> Walker William Hersey Southwark 1d 115
Yates John Ernest Southwark 1d 115

Suggests a Hersey-Walker connection.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 22 Dec 2008 19:23

Another possible option for the Samuel in the 1911 household -- this one would have been 7 in census age:

Births Jun 1903
WALKER Samuel Southwark 1d 129

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 22 Dec 2008 19:19

Births Mar 1878
Hersey Catherine Elizabeth St.Saviour 1d 29

There's that one, anyhow!

EvieBeavie Report 22 Dec 2008 19:14

I've been looking for various permutations of cath* walker married hurs* hers* and vice versa ... to no avail.

The only Catherine Hersey in 1881 is born c1878 in St Luke, daughter of Charles and Louisa. No Walker to match. Catherine daugher of Charles and Louisa is still there in 1891 in St Luke.

In 1891, Rebecca has daughter Caroline c1878. Could be an error in the original.

Now all we need to work out is why MMN on the births is down as Walker
