Is there anywhere I can look up an English birth certificate free of charge?
Looking for exact DOB for....
Cecilia P Ross, born June 1928, Orsett in Essex
Father-John Ross
Mother-Elizabeth Foster
Also looking for John and Elizabeths date and place of marriage, was hoping to get this from the birth certificate.

There are some free sites like http://www.bmdshare.com/pages/searchbirth.php but they only have a few certs at present. It most likely means another £7.

www.freebmd.org.uk carries almost all England and Wales bmds from the start of registration on July 1 1837 to, currently about 1925 or 1930

The entries are being transcribed by volunteers, and they are working very hard to get the entries finished up until 1983, when entries were first put on the web. As a result, freebmd is continaully being updated.

it is free, and the one place that we all look to begin with

BUT the only information you will find is :-
name of child,
quarter of registration,
year of registration, and
place of registration.

You have to buy the actual certificate to find out any more .......... there is nowhere on the web where you will find this, except possibly on bmdshare.com ...... and then only if someone has happened to have the certificate that you want and has entered the information on there.

Is Cecilia dead? The death indexes will give her DOB if it isn't too early.

Yes Cecilia is dead, she died in New York, I have found her on the US Social Security death index, it doesnt give her DOB though.

Unless you know that she was definitely born in June, her birth registration indicates that she was REGISTERED in that quarter, ie. April, May or June.
She could have been born anytime within those months or indeed up to 42 days before the beginning of April, bringing it back to possibly February or March.

I'm sure it was June she was born. I have the ship passenger listing of when she sailed to New York. She was 5 months old, so I worked it back to June. Cant afford to get her birth cert just now though, lost my job yesterday.

If you know where the family are likely to have been living before they sailed, you might find a baptism for Cecilia. This might just possibly list her birthdate.
Some parents would think it wise to have a child baptised before such a journey.

Catherine, it's a bit early here, and perhaps I'm not reading this thread correctly, nor the passenger list, but the immigration record I see show Cecilia's birthplace as Scotland. (So, is this "your" Cecilia.)
Place of Birth
Elizabeth: Greenock, Scotland
Cecilia: Little Thurrock, Scotland

Also, the ship sailed on 3rd November, 1928. So, if they weren't counting exact days, she could have been born in May.

If Cecilia got married and had an uncommon surname, you might be able to find out more information about her in America. Do you know where she is buried? The cemetery office may be able to give you more information.

Sorry to hear about your job. I hope everything works out soon for you.

Cecilia and her mum were living with Murdoch Mitchell (Elizabeth's brother-in-law) in 1930. Census enumeration was April 9. Cecilia's age is recorded as 1 10/12, so she more than likely was born in June.

Lisa
You are looking at the correctly at the passenger list, it does say that Cecilia was born in Little Thurrock in Scotland, but as far as I know the only Little Thurrock in Britain is in Essex....unless anyone can help me out otherwise.

I am unable to find Cecilia on the 1930 census. Where they staying in New York? Was John Ross not around, that Cecilias father?

To date I dont know whether or not Cecilia got married, she did have a daughter called Theresa.

I dont know where she is buried.

Hi Catherine.
1930 US Federal Census, dated April 9
Name: Cecelia Ross
Home in 1930: Detroit, Wayne, Michigan
Age: 1
Birth Year: abt 1928
Relation to Head of House: Niece
Parents' birthplace: Scotland
Household Members:
Name Age
Murdoch Mitchell 34, born Scotland, immigrated 1923, Pattern Maker, Motor Body Shop
Henrietta Mitchell 34, born Scotland
Dorothy Mitchell, 7/12? , born Michigan
Elizabeth Ross 32, married at age 29, born Scotland, immigrated 1928, Saleslady, Dept. Store (s-i-l to Murdoch)
Cecelia Ross 1 10/12, born England, immigrated 1928
Address: 626 Pennsylvania
Cecilia's birthplace is England; perhaps there is an error on the immigration record.
Elizabeth is shown as married.
Will look for her father. Would you have John's birthdate, please? And occupation, if possible. He had a common name.

Is Cecilia's Social Security information under her maiden name, then?

Catherine

Catherine Report 17 Jan 2009 14:38

Lisa
I'm confused now. I had Cecelia in the 1930 census as living with her mum Elizabeth, father John (Known as Jack) and George (Jacks brother). They were staying in Queens New York.
So I think there must be 2 elizabeth ross's with daughters called cecelia, that were born around the same time.
What website are you using for the census? Its seems to give more census information than I can get...I'm not that good at this family research yet.

John Alexander Ross was born in Greenock Scotland on 03 Jan 1896.
Died 14 March 1963 in New York. He was known as Jack.
At some point he worked for Bethlehem Steel in New York, as an outside machinist.

I have tried to relook for Cecelia on the US death index now and cant find her. I had her down as dying in 1984, not sure where I got that information from now!
