Hello.
Funny you should ask that. I've been researching that tonight. Beechwood Pond, Hamsey is on the birth certificate. Hamsey is part of "Barcombe & Hamsey" There was a family of Jenners born in Barcombe and feature in the 1941 census. I have started to trace down and see if I get anywhere. I'm not sure but I'm sure I saw Chailey in one of these records. The people I've started with are John Jenner (1801) married to Martha. They had four sons and one daughter. I'll let you know if I find anymore.
Thank you.

Do you have any idea where Beechwood Pond is?

The only one google finds is in Pennsylvania. ;)

Knowing that could help place your Jenner, with one or another of the Ditchling and Chailey clans, possibly. She could still have been from away, and been a transient farm worker. Or from another location in the area.

It sounds from the birth certificate like she was very young, and afraid to approach her family when she went into labour, so went off alone to deliver. Or maybe she was in the fields working, and the "hut" was what was handy for the delivery.

That Henry Penfold household in 1901. The Penfolds are in Ditchling, the Jenners in Chailey.

Henry Penfold 42 - farmer/employer, born Kent
Mary Penfold 45
William Penfold 14
Emma Penfold 12
John Penfold 10
Kate Penfold 8

Oh, but my goodness, who is in the household next on the list??

William Jenner 78 - farmer/employer, born Ditchling
Philip Jenner 47 - son
Annie E Jenner 39 - daur-in-law
John J Jenner 8 - g-son
Augustus W Jenner 5 - g-son

I think we have our Penfold-Jenner connection, if we can just figure out what it is.

Jenner cousins seem to have gravitated.

Marriages Dec 1915
Jenner Harry D Jenner Lewes 2b 498
Jenner Mary J Jenner Lewes 2b 498

Marriages Sep 1919
Jenner Harry D Jenner Lewes 2b 525
Jenner Hilda B Jenner Lewes 2b 525

Or maybe I should say Harry Jenner seems to have gravitated to his cousins! In any event those marriages probably account for the other Jenner-Jenner births in the district.

I just searched for all Jenner events in Lewes from 1913 onward, to see what might have become of Minnie. You may not have seen this:

Births Sep 1913
Jenner Ellen G Jenner Lewes 2b 285

That's conclusive, that Ellen's mum wasn't married, since Ellen was registered under both surnames.

The only Henry Penfold in Lewes in 1911:

PENFOLD HENRY M 1859 52 Lewes Sussex

One hesitates to think, and hopes not.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 5 Feb 2009 23:28

Births Dec 1897
Jenner Alfred Reuben W Lewes 2b 169

So that particular household was settled in Lewes for some time.

In 1901 in Chailey, Sussex:

Alfred Jenner 24 - born in Chailey - Agricultural Labourer
Mary A Jenner 25 - born in Newick
Alfred R W Jenner 3
Ellen M Jenner 9 months

This is the only match for Ellen M(Minnie)'s birth:

Births Jun 1900
Jenner Alice Eleanor M Lewes 2b 194

These do seem to be a possibility for your Jenners.

You can also search for everyone with surname Jenner in a household in a particular place with a particular person in the household. Jenners in Lewes with Minnie Jenner in the household are:

JENNER ALFRED M 1877 34 Lewes Sussex
JENNER ALFRED RUBEN WILLIAM M 1898 13 Lewes Sussex
JENNER DAISY MARY F 1909 2 Lewes Sussex
JENNER IVY GRACE F 1906 5 Lewes Sussex
JENNER MARY ANN F 1876 35 Lewes Sussex
JENNER WALTER HENRY M 1903 8 Lewes Sussex

EvieBeavie Report 5 Feb 2009 23:20

You can search the 1911 census free, just not see the details.

On a general search for MINNIE JENNER, no other details, this is one person in the results list:

http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx

JENNER ELLEN MINNIE
F
1901
10
Lewes Sussex

She would have been painfully young to have a child, but it would not be unheard of.

There are several other Minnie Jenners in Sussex, and others elsewhere. Also Amelias, but none in Lewes.

An update.
I have now received the birth certificate. According to the birth certificate Ellen Grace's father was called Henry Penfold. Mother was called Minnie Amelia Jenner (mo mention of becoming Penfold in the relevant column). Though Ellen took the name Penfold I do not believe her parents were married. Place of birth is listed as a hut near Beechwood Pond Lewes Sussex. I've endlessly searched records for a "Minnie Amelia Jenner" but with no luck. Her occupation on the birth cert was a field worker so I am presuming she was quite young. I have tried Mary, Mary Ann, Minerva in place of Minnie. I've sort of reached a dead end.
thank you for all the help below.

Kay????

Kay???? Report 13 Jan 2009 23:31

Also Penfold may not have been the first marriage to Miss Jenner,
If you know her parents names it maybe easier to find Mr ???Penfold marrying the mother in a previous married name.and her maiden name would still be Jenner on a Birth Cert,

This is the index page Margaret refers to:

Marriages Mar 1888 (96%)
Clark Benjamin Charles Lewes 2b 258
Funnell Elizabeth Lewes 2b 258
JENNER Annie Maria Lewes 2b 258

Notice this quarter is not yet fully transcribed, but only 96% done. I had a look at the Penfold entries in the actual index, and none was married in Lewes.

Here's the GRO ref you'll need for the b.cert:
Surname First name(s) Mother District Vol Page
Births Sep 1913 (>99%)
Penfold Ellen G Jenner Lewes 2b 285

Vickier.
You may have to extend your search for the marriage. My grandmother was born in 1886. Her parents married in 1861. It was common to have children after 25 years

There is a marriage in Lewes in 1888 for Annie Maria Jenner. Unfortunately only 1 male name on the page

You really need to get the birth certificate for Ellen Penfold to find the full names of both parents.
