Hi
Yes the certificates that i have both say James Buckby gower.
They state his occuption as Britannia Metal Smith, as with the 1911 census.

I have also learnt from a relative that they seem to think they did used a double barrelled surname - Ward Gower.

Do the marriage certs still give fathers occupation? and do both give his name in full i.e "James Buckby "

Catheine, on the actual image it says he is 9yrs old.

Where do you get James is 62 from Catheine?? On the transcript and image i have it clearly says he is 46 which he was cause he was born in 1864

sablon

sablon Report 22 Jan 2009 08:56

“James Leeson Gower born 1905 to James Buckby Gower and Mary Gower formerly Ward.
Alice Ward Gower born 1902 to James Buckby Gower and Mary Ward Gower formerly Howard.”

“Fairthorn, the maiden names were Mary Ward Gower formerly Howard and Mary Gower formerly Howard”

“the normal way of putting mothers maiden name on (English & Welsh) Birth certificates is to use ' formerly' not nee.”

“can only say I have mutiple marriage certificates & they say xxxx formerly xxxxx when they have married before"

From Catherine’s info I would guess Mary’s maiden name was Howard and HER mother’s name was Ward – possible Mary Ward at birth and then her mother married a Howard and she also took his name or the Howard children had family surnames as middle names.

FAIRTHORN

FAIRTHORN Report 21 Jan 2009 23:42

I can only say I have mutiple marriage certificates &
they say xxxx formerly xxxxx when they have married before

So on this thread what is Mary's maiden name?

WARD OR HOWARD ?

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 21 Jan 2009 23:30

sory felt I must butt in here after reading through this out of interest
FAIRTHORN - the normal way of putting mothers maiden name on (English & Welsh) birth certificates is to use ' formerly' not nee. On all the ones I have (and I have many) they all say eg 'Mary formerly Smith'.
Don't know if this helps in this case or confuses it but it saves looking for that extra marriage.

Catherine

Catherine Report 21 Jan 2009 22:31

Yea i guess Catheine but i have his school records and his ages from both marriage certs that all all up

sablon

sablon Report 21 Jan 2009 18:53

Catherine

Catherine Report 21 Jan 2009 14:10

No, haven't managed to find Annie on the 1911 one as yet.

It says Mary was born abt 1873 in Sheffield

FAIRTHORN

FAIRTHORN Report 21 Jan 2009 13:38

Have you found ANNIE GOWER on the 1911 CENSUS

& how old is MARY in 1911 & where born
so we can look on the 1901 census for her.

Catherine

Catherine Report 21 Jan 2009 12:29

No idea but she obviously did unless she remarried another Lee.

Catheine, thats about 10yrs to early for Harry :) He was born around 1901/2
