"Hannah, Annies mother, was called Lee and she married a Stanley"

BUT Hannah was LEE on the 1901 CENSUS down as a widow
why would she revert back to her maiden name ?

Hannah, Annies mother, was called Lee and she married a Stanley.

I wondered if there was a possibility Annie was his father but unlikely they had any kids after all that time married?

Yes they lived in Lincolnshire but moved to Sheffield so i think Harry would probably have been born in Sheffield as James and Annie were here then.

GOWER, James B Head Married M 26 1865 Britania Metal Smith Colsterworth Lincolnshire
GOWER, Annie Wife Married F 24 1867
Sheffield Yorkshire

So James was born in Lincolnshire if that is the correct one for 1891

1901 Name: James Gower
Age: 36
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1865
Relation: Head
Gender: Male
Where born: Colsterworth St Grantham, Lincolnshire, England

Civil Parish: Nether Hallam
Ecclesiastical parish: Crookes St Thomas
Town: Sheffield
County/Island: Yorkshire
Country: England

does that tie in with the 1911 Census

Catherine

Catherine Report 21 Jan 2009 10:01

Why would he be confused though? He was living with james in 1911 so obviously he 'became' his father.
Also James Leeson, who probably was James son also put deceased on his marriage cert in 1930.

Yes i have the Harry Gowers cert.

"So you don't think James Buckby Gower is his father?"

No This would explain the confusion re Father deceased on his marriage certificate.

Catherine

Catherine Report 21 Jan 2009 09:55

So you don't think James Buckby Gower is his father?

FAIRTHORN

FAIRTHORN Report 21 Jan 2009 09:54

"Also, where was Mary in 1901 when James was living on his own?"

ODDS are living with an HOWARD pregnant with HARRY.

Harry's father

FAIRTHORN

FAIRTHORN Report 21 Jan 2009 09:50

But you have no maiden name on the birth certificates

it should be nee XXXX not formerly
formerly means married before

But in this case I think all those formerly are just comman law
( living with someone ) as perhaps the same as GOWER as he was perhaps STILL married to ANNIE

PLUS I ASSUME
you have Harry on the 1911 census with Gower.
If he is then he has become Harry Gower but born Harry HOWARD as Mary is NOW living with GOWER,

Catherine

Catherine Report 21 Jan 2009 09:48

Also, where was Mary in 1901 when James was living on his own?

Catherine

Catherine Report 21 Jan 2009 09:47

Will have a look at the Harry Howard but the 1911 census shows Harry as being 9 so it could be a little early.

Fairthorn, the maiden names were Mary Ward Gower formerly Howard and Mary Gower formerly Howard.

Catheine, will look at the marriage but not sure as i think James never left Sheffield. Also that maiden name doesn't figure anywhere.

FAIRTHORN

FAIRTHORN Report 21 Jan 2009 09:41

Mary was living with an HOWARD
THEN an WARD
THEN an GOWER

All the formerly Ward.& formerly Howard were perhaps just common law

LOOKS like the HARRY HOWARD I found is the one !!
It fits with the history

surely this is the marriage of 16 years to Mary ann

Births Jun 1901

Howard Harry Ecclesall B. 9c 406

Ecclesall Bierlow is South Sheffield

South Sheffield was where Alice was born

Was there a nee on the other birth certificates. this would indicate Mary's maiden name !

Hello

I have posted about my elusive GGrandmother and her son, my Grandfather before but as i have a smidgeon more info thought i would post again just to get your thoughts really.
So basically i'm trying to find out who my grandfathers mother was.
My grandad was Harry Gower born around 1901. His father was James Buckby Gower according to both of Harrys wedding certs. It says deceased for James on those wedding certs in 1927 and 1932 but he didn't die until 1940.
My mum was taken into care at the age of 5 along with her siblings so she didn't know much but she isn't with us now so can't ask her anyway.
The main problem is i can't find a birth entry for Harry.
The facts i have found from various sources are as follows.

School records show Harrys father as James and they state he was born in June 1901(2 separate dates though)
His death cert in Mar 1958 shows him as 56yrs.
I have found 2 other Gower children, Harrys siblings.
James Leeson Gower born 1905 to James Buckby Gower and Mary Gower formerly Ward.
Alice Ward Gower born 1902 to James Buckby Gower and Mary Ward Gower formerly Howard.
I'm presuming this is the same mother??

In 1886 James Buckby married Annie Stanley. In the 1891 census they are living together, no kids. In 1901 they are still married but james is alone and Annie with her mother Hannah Lee.
In the 1911 census it shows James Gower and Mary living with Harry and James Leeson. It states they have been married for 16yrs but there is no record of any such marriage. It also states she has only had 2 children and 2 are living? So what happened to Alice??
Have found both Alices and James Leesons birth registries but not Harrys. Yes i have looked for a Henry and also have a couple of Ward certificates but can't see him being registered anything other than Gower if the others were registered Gower?

James was born at Walkley Bank Road and Alice at Lydgate Lane, both in Sheffield.

If anyone has any thoughts i'd be happy to hear them as i'm a bit flummoxed!

Thanks and sorry if i've confused you!
