You say you are v sure William married mary jones. If you do not have any children's birth cert where did you find her name? I just find it strange that there is a marriage to Mary Garstang and he has a visitor named garstang in 1881. If HIS name was William Jones Whitworth (and it is William J on the census) it is probable that all the children would have the name Jones Whitworth. Plus no children born between 1866 & 1871.

So, if William Jones Whitworth married Mary Garstang in 1871, he can't be the son of William Whitworth and Mary Jones because they didn't marry until 1866.
This is getting confusing!

Hi Lisa,
Sorry for the delay in answering your question, I had to go out and do a little shopping and we're in the midst of a major snowstorm here, driving is treacherous. Boy, I'm glad to be home again!
BVRI is British Vital Records Index, a set of 16 cd's that I purchased many years ago from LDS. I understand they're no longer for sale but the records are now on Worldwide Ancestry, which is a bit too expensive for me. The records are extracted from parish records and contain 10.4 million births and 1.9 million marriages in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales between 1530-1906.

I think the marriage for William J and Mary J with visitor Alice Garstang will be

William Jones Whitworth/Mary Jane Garstang
1871 Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Blackburn
County: Lancashire
Volume: 8e

Back to the drawing board guys!!!
The story so far:
Robert Jones Whitworth b1815 ish
Father John Jones Whitworth,unknown mother!!
Robert married Ann Parker
1842 in Middleton,Lancashire.
At this time he was working as a school master.
His father John was a "Tinner"
Ann's father was a watchmaker
The details on the cert are few!!
No address just Middleton,no ages, just "of full age"
A year after their marriage, in 1843 they had a son
William (Jones) Whitworth (born at Duncan St Ashton-u-Lyne)
At this time Robert was still working as a school master
But in 1871 on the marriage of his son William he was working as a cashier.
Well i think thats about it ,just to say a HUGE thanks to all you FAB people who give up their time to help me on this long & suprisingly emotional Journey, kind regards Lisaxxxx
