Katie Report 20 Feb 2009 12:04

I have found a family by the name of Housego, the head of the house was Thomas and the wife Annie. They had quite a few children, one of them by the name of Frederick William, and they also had another by the name of Thomas George. I am wondering if whether the head of house was also called Thomas George, and went by the name George, hence why he was listed as George on Fredericks marriage certifIcate.

Also, this family that I have found have a sister by the name of Winifred, in 1914 she married a man by the name of Freshney. When Frederick died in 1923 an A.Freshney registered his death and stated that it was his brother-in-law.

On the 1911 census the family are without the head of house Thomas, who may have died as Annie is listed as a widow. But there is a son Frederick, whose age is 36 and he is listed as single and winifred is aged 19 on there which means she would have been about the right age to marry in 1914. Maybe Frederick was listed as single as he had separated from Emily, who was in 1911 living with John Litson.

Do you think i am going down the right lines, or clutching at straws?

That does look very promising Katie. The link with the witness on the death record seems too much of a coincidence to ignore. Definitely worth looking into a little further!!

You said earlier in the thread that you have Frederick's marriage cert. What was his and his father's profession?
What were the names of the witnesses?

could possibly be the marriage for this couple:-
Marriages Dec 1869 (>99%)
BYATT Ann Rebecca Mile End 1c 1108
Housego Thomas Mile End 1c 1108

unfortunately no George in the name is noted!

ann

ann Report 20 Feb 2009 15:39

Katie,I used to hang a round with a girl called Linda Howsgo back at school. We lived in West Ham.Must be a connection but sadly i dont know what happened to her after i got married. Annie

Catherine

Catherine Report 20 Feb 2009 15:45

Looks like his birth:-
Births Dec 1847 (>99%)
HOUSEGE Thomas Blything 13 360
The district Blything is in the county of Suffolk
Registration district for Wrentham SFK From - 1837 To - 1935

still no George, that is frustrating!

Nevertheless I do feel that there are too many coincidences and not enough Frederick Housego's around not to take this lead as serious.

Catherine

Catherine Report 20 Feb 2009 15:57

Births of all Frederick Housego's that I could find, anywhere in the country between 1875 and 1879 using phonetic search on surnames:-

Births Dec 1875
HOUSEGO Frederick William Mile End 1c 535

Births Dec 1876 (>99%)
Housego Frederick William Depwade 4b 241
The district Depwade spans the boundaries of the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk

only two and only one from the London area which certainly seems to be the one in the above census records!

Katie

Katie Report 20 Feb 2009 15:59

WOW thank you so much everyone for your help!!

In reply to Catherine's question Frederick and his father were both listed as labourers, the witnesses on the certificate were Philip and Emily Tucker.

I am going to have to keep searching into this one! I just would love to find out if the father was Thomas George, as quite a few people in my family did go and still do go by their second names!

Catherine

Catherine Report 20 Feb 2009 21:49

So, the first birth record for Mile End would be the Frederick with father Thomas and mother Ann and the sister Winifred. Unfortunately Thomas is noted in 1891 census as being a Plumber (as he is in the previous census records) so not sure if he would be down on marriage cert. as Labourer.
This Frederick is also noted in 1891 census as Coachman (Inn), so not too sure if this the correct family??

The other birth would certainly be the Frederick in the other 1891 census born in Barnwell, Norfolk and living with his Uncle William Marshall and Clara (Housego). He is noted as Labourer so could be worth looking a little closer into this family to see what his father was called or see if Clara had a brother George!!

Or, you could just buy the two birth cert.s to see what they say!!!

Shame about the Witnesses, they are often members of the family, brothers or sisters or sometimes the parents. Could of course be his married sister?

Catherine

Catherine Report 20 Feb 2009 21:59

Well that's not very nice.
This looks like Clara in 1851 but she's been sent off to work for someone:-

Catherine

Catherine Report 20 Feb 2009 22:34

Just had a thought!
Was Frederick's father, noted as deceased on the marriage cert.?
If no then it probably isn't the one in the census records you found as he was deceased by 1901 census.

ann

ann Report 20 Feb 2009 22:56

Katie,my friend Linda Howsego father was Alfred J Howsego born 1931 in West Ham so she is a part of your family. Annie

Katie

Katie Report 23 Feb 2009 10:41

No, Frederick's father was just listed as labourer, so I assume he was still alive when Frederick and Emily married. You say the one i found was deceased by 1901, but they married in 1898 so he could have died maybe shortly after?

Thanks for your continued help :)

Annie Rebecca Byatt 1853 and Thomas Housego 1849-1893 were my great Grandparents. Are you still researching the Housego's as this was my maiden name?
