Victoria - technically, the register date refers to the date of registration, not to the date of the event. By law, a death was supposed to be rego'ed within 6 d after the death (or the body was found), and births within 6 w after the birth.
Before 1875, it was ultimately the registrar's job to find and record a birth, but after that it was the parents' responsibility. I think marrs were sent to the registrar by the ceremony's approved officiator. It wouldn't really be unusual to find someone born, say mar 17, to be rego'ed in April.

"September quarter" ie July Aug Sept, so the event will have take place at anytime in that period

One can look up BMDs at:
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
This is an incomplete transcription of the GRO index - very little after 1930 - and the reference given allows one to buy certs from the GRO for 7 GBP - without that info they cost more, and who knows what if anything you'll get, but even nothing would cost you.

sorry I have just had problems with internet.
I think Grumpy has given excellent advice.
There are lots of possibilities from the info we have at present. The worst mistake you can make is to make an assumption.
As you get into the census periods we can cross reference census with other records but you need the marriage first.
When you get it post the results on this thread
and hopefully you should get even better results.

pm's between me and robert

hi robert, don't know if you already have this so did not post this but have found the death index for cyril david coyne,
it is the same birth date as your cyril.

England & Wales, Death Index: 1984-2005
about Cyril David Coyne
Name: Cyril David Coyne
Birth Date: 12 Sep 1936
Death Registration Month/Year: Oct 1995
Age at death (estimated): 59
Registration district: Wandsworth
Inferred County: London
Register number: A87A
District and Subdistrict: 2561A
Entry Number: 75

I really appreciate this. We have had no contact with any of my fathers side since I was 7 (36 years ago). So, at least i can let my dad know.

do you mind if i post this because someone else may.
you can get the death certificate, it will give you a lot of information, also will tell you who registered it and their relation to him. also you could check the library close to there and see if they have back copies of newspapers for obituaries.
i am glad to have been of some help

Nope, I don't mind at all... Who knows, I might get to meet someone else that has been looking for me this way. :)

Thank you everyone for all the hard work you have saved me.

I will do exactly that and see if I can get the marriage license first.

will explain meriden district

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/Reg/districts/meriden.html

Grumpy

Grumpy Report 25 Feb 2009 23:25

when registering births marriages deaths the year is split into quarters.
jan feb march referred to as march quarter
april may june as june quarter
july aug sep as september quarter
oct nov dec as december quarter

surrey mid e is the district the marriage was registered in

vol number is the book it is written in page is page in said book

so to order a certificate you got the gro site(general records office)
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

register, follow the instructions and you will see where and how the marriage index (as it is known) is used. never pay more than £7.00 the going rate. suggest you get marriage certificate first as it will give names of fathers which you can then cross reference with birth certificates
