It's great that you were able to confirm his middle name was Donaldson. All evidence now points to him being Wilson before the 1901 census.

He was actually 95 when he died and not 85.

my own g grandad changed his first name and the spelling of his surname ,

Daniel Donaldson Turpin was my grandfather, my father was Albert aged 2 listed on the 1901 census. Daniel was a house painter- on his death certificate in 1935 says he was a journeyman house painter and decorator'. he had 2 more daughters after Albert-- Esther and Elsie. I have not found anything about him before 1901 census, so any information would be great.

Daniel D Wilson occupations are white smith, gas fitter and engine fitter on previous census so general house smith is in the same ball park.

Perhaps Michelle will know a bit more tomorrow when she comes back. If she can purchase the 1911 image that would help.

The only Daniel born Wolsingham is that one. His first wife was Elizabeth too.

There was someone I was helping the other day. The husband had a surname like Handcock but was Cox once he left his first wife. Like Michelle, we couldn't find him on earlier censuses but his place of birth helped us find him in the end.
