The penny has just dropped!!

1881 - Residence: A Waggon, Cheddleton, Staffs

Does that literally mean they lived in a wagon? Like a travellers caravan?

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 13 Mar 2009 20:46

You have Ancestry, no? The image is there.

I call it Corelanda.

And it's a girl, of course. Why did I assume boy?

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 13 Mar 2009 20:47

Yes! That was one mighty slow penny!

Wagon, Caravan. Same deal. They were travellers -- they stopped in towns, and he re-caned chairs, and she sold clothes pegs.

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 13 Mar 2009 20:49

The people after them on the same page reside in, respectively,

A loft
A Barn
A Tent

The previous address is "Butchers Meadow", which is preceded by "[something] Yard" (those households look settled.)

They are on the last page for the district, suggesting they were on the outskirts.

Already did that, Sue, with no luck. Sorry!
Update, oops, lot of messages added in between, I was referring to looking for siblings of Uriah.

I don't have Ancestry, only The Genealogist and they don't have image of 1881 for all counties & Staffordshire is one they don't have - typical!!!

A very slow penny but my excuse is that I've had a busy day!!!

All those children in a wagon/caravan - unbelievable!!!

Sue in Sunny Worthing

Sue in Sunny Worthing Report 13 Mar 2009 20:53

Margaret, thank you.

I just can't get over them all in a little wagon, mending chairs & making pegs!!!

IGI -- you know you can search by

father - given name, surname
mother - given name

with nothing else, right?

Any Event, 1875 - 1895, British Isles
Father: Timothy Bailey, Mother: Mary

1. Laura Delia Bailey - C019877
Gender: Female Christening: 15 APR 1894 Burbage, Derby, England
2. Delilah Bailey - C135706
Gender: Female Christening: 21 AUG 1882 Burbage, Derby, England
3. DELILAH [BAILEY] - C138677
Gender: Female Christening: 21 AUG 1882 Bromyard, Hereford, England
4. Matthew Beeley - C010413
Gender: Male Christening: 06 MAY 1876 Alstonfield, Stafford, England

All parents are Timothy and Mary Ann(e).

Now DELILAH, there is one Romany name!

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 13 Mar 2009 20:56

And I have no idea why there are two Delilah christenings in two different places on the same day. Seems unlikely there were two such people. But they're both extracted records.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 13 Mar 2009 20:56

The other families on that page of the 1881 census were living in a loft, a barn, a tent. Sounds like your Baileys were a little better off, at least they were living in a waggon!

Oops again, Evie beat me to that little bit of info!

My My My Delilah .................. (sorry couldn't resist that)

These children were all baptised after the 1881 census so we wouldn't have known about them & I didn't think to look then up like that on IGI - thank you.

What do you think of this?

1881 census says Timothy age 33 born Macclesfiled

Birth: Timothy Bailey March Q 1845 Reg District Congleton (which covers Macclefield)
Marriage: Dec Q 1876 Timothy Bailey to either Mary Barlow or Mary Doody Registration District Congleton
Birth: George Bailey Sept Q 1872 Congleton

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 13 Mar 2009 21:17

Spending time. Order up those certs.

You also want to get googling up sites about travellers in the mid-19th century to show that granddaughter.

A brother of Timothy, I wonder?

Births Mar 1853
Bailey Uriah Congleton 8a 267

This group in 1891 definitely says Galley on the image, but I wonder.

Wriah Galley 35 - c1856, Tunstall; potter; single
James Galley 45 - c1846, Tunstall, general labourer; married
Frances Galley 33 - wife of "
Maud M Galley 11 - c1880, niece, Stoke
Uriah Galley 13 - c1878, nephew, Stoke

Nah ...

Births Dec 1878
Galley Uriah Stoke T. 6b 232

Evie - looks like those Congleton ones might be the correct ones especially as you also found an Uriah

As you say, we need to get some cert - but after all the expense of those Barnards/Richers, I'll be selling pegs from a caravan soon!!!!

You are really fantastic how you help me though, thank you

And thank you to Margaret & Maureen

Oh, Sue, it's just because you're such a truly wonderful person. ;)

Beats being treated like an interactive database with a keyboard, as too many posters hereabouts seem to think of other members!

Sue in Sunny Worthing

Sue in Sunny Worthing Report 13 Mar 2009 21:32

Well, not that wonderful!!! But definately 100% truly appreciative

I can't believe how so many people here willingly give up so much of their time to help others with their reseach

I would've given up well before on both of the lines of research that you've helped sort out - thank you
