Helen Report 14 Mar 2009 13:58

Hi
Could anyone possibly help me find more information on my Great Grandparents, all I have is: Alexander MacDonald (telegraph linesman) & Jessie MacDonald (ne McLean) married 26 Jan 1900 in Inverness and had my Gran Jessie Macdonald 01 August1901 in Melros Inverness. Also my other Great Grandad James Kyle (steel smelter) & Great Grandmother Ellen Kyle (nee Greer) had my Grandad William Kyle 01 March 1895 in Protglenone Ballymena.
I would also be very greatful if anyone could point me in the direction of where would be the best place to find further information.

Thanks Helen

I would suggest your gran was born in Melrose ROX, not Melros INV.
Incidentally, I suppose you know Janet and Jessie are effectively the same name.
All SCT certs (i.e., B,M & D give the parentage of the principals if the informant knows it, except that fathers of illeg kids can't be added on b.certs unless they attend the registration).
You can buy uncertified images of the register for abt 1 GBP if it's old enough (100/75/50 y for B/M/D) - more recent stuff can only be gotten on certs at 10 GBP per.
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
You can also buy census images from them at 1 GBP per.

In addition to buying images thru ScotlandsPeople, you can rent films of a Old Parish Registers to view thru an LDS FHC.
To find one of these, search in the centre column at:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

You can do a place search in their library catalog to see what records they hold for, say, Rosemarkie (don't overlook the "view film notes" button when it appears at top right):

Title Blotter registers, 1844-1855
Authors Fortrose and Rosemarkie Free Church (Main Author)
Notes Microfilm of original records (Book MR. 42 ; vol. 1.) in the New Register House, Edinburgh.
Contains baptisms, 1844-1855.
Fortrose is a royal Parliamentary burgh in Rosemarkie Parish.

Note Location Film
Blotter registers FHL BRITISH Film 1068236 Item 10

Title Parish registers for Rosemarkie, 1739-1854
Authors Church of Scotland. Parish Church of Rosemarkie (Ross and Cromarty) (Main Author)
Notes Microfilm of O.P.R. ms. no. 80 in the New Register House, Edinburgh.

Note Location Film
Vol. 1, Baptisms, 1744-1819, marriages, 1739-1819, burials, 1775-1819 -- v. 2. Baptisms, 1820-1854, marriages, 1820-1854, burials, 1820-1854. (Preferred film for viewing. Use this before ordering the other filming.) FHL BRITISH Film 990658 Item 1

Of course, except for Scottish burial records, one has the alternative of buying images from SP for these.

For Scotland, a pretty fair number of these OPRs have been extracted, and the extracts appear in the IGI which can be searched (under advanced search) at:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
In addition to extracted records, the IGI contains records submitted by LDS members which are of variable quality.

I think Jessie MacDonald MS McLean was d/o Henry & Flora McLean MS MacDonald, and these records are Jessie's uncles and aunts:

Alex MacDonald isn't exactly an uncommon name - you need his marr rego to Jessie to see his parents. Jessie's a bit easier because of her p.o.b. The census seems to concur with the view expressed in an earlier post.

Now Jessie MacDonald MS McLean, d/o Henry + Flora McLean MS McDonald is with aunt Flora More MS Gilmour in 1871.
Flora is really her g aunt, the distinction is often not made.
Flora's sis was Janet McDonald MS Gilmour, w/o Alexander and mother of Flora.
I didn't find Flora More MS Gilmour in 1871 - I think this is her, mistranscribed:

1871 Scotland Census
Registration Number: 59
Registration district: Avoch
Civil Parish: Avoch
County: Ross and Cromarty
Address: Crosshill
ED: 3
Household schedule number: 60

Alexander More 58 Crosshill, Rosshire Head Farmer Of 50 Acres Arable
Field More 59 Crosshill, Rosshire Wife Farmers Wife
Flora MacDonald 14 Crosshill, Rosshire Niece
Mary Donaldson 18 Crosshill, Rosshire Servant General Servant
George Davidson 78 Inverness, Invernesshire Servant Farm Servant
John Foreman 15 Nairn, Nairnshire Servant Farm Servant

My guess is Alex + Janet McDonald MS Gilmour are dead by 1871, but since Flora's only 14, there should be a statutory d.rego for them, and possibly a stat m.rego too (stat regos began in 1855 in SCT - 1864 in Ireland, except non-RC marrs began abt 1846 there).
I didn't find any of them in 1861 - Flora wasn't with her aunt Flora is all I can say.
I've never found Alex - you'ld need to see his marr or d.rego for his details.

David -
it's almost certain that no Macleans related to you , and living in the area of Hillock Head Farm, will just happen to see your message.

You can try "Search All Members Trees" under "Search" at the top of this page, and see if anyone has your relatives in their tree. If so, click on "Find out more" to contact them.

But it's still an extremely long shot, that any of them would be living near where you're staying - if that's what you mean (maybe I've misunderstood your post.)
Some relatives might, however, be able to meet you somewhere else, at another time.
